By examining what starts out as a simple rogue Lexington cop, she (through the work of a Kentucky State Trooper) follows a trail that leads to an exposure of absolute corruption. What one would think is a simple drug peddling ring turns out to have significant connections with South American governments, Quadaffi, major players in the Kentucky government, and a potential presidential candidate. El Sicario: The Autobiography of a Mexican Assassin ReviewI work on the border of Juarez, Mexico. I deal with issues that these guys have created regularly. This is a very good and true, seems to be, account of the life in the most corrupt goverment. Juarez is a battle zone and this guys manages to explain how it got this point. The editing was superb and the narration well thought out. I think that many who have an interest in Mexican/narco politics will find this as a great tool to understand the culture that the narco-terrorists have crafted over many years. Failed drug policies are evident as the reader goes thru the twists and turns of a true sicario. I wish all people would be able to understand and help a nation that is on the verge of collapse.
I see the complaints and the jabs that others have given Bowden, but this guy seems to have a true interest in why Mexico is as corrupt as it is. The Mexican people are truly the victims and Mr. Bowden has once again outlined and told the stories that need to be told. Well done sir. Now I am off to read Down by the River. A Time to Betray: The Astonishing Double Life of a CIA Agent Inside the Revolutionary Guards of Iran ReviewI'm a cynical guy. US politics teaches me that leaders are cowards and fakers who are really out for their own glory. Americans desperately need a hero, and this author is the real deal. He started as a religious idealist whose talents made him the ultimate insider. When he witnessed unspeakable tortures committed against the families of people suspected of betrayal, he betrayed his "brothers." He volunteered to spy for the CIA, loading us up with invaluable information about Khomeini's associates. Every day he had to stare into the faces of people who would torture his wife and baby if they found out, but he kept going. He never got any fame or credit, and he did it totally alone, on his own initiative.
I'm a hard-hearted guy. I don't cry at sappy movies. But Khalili's rendering of his two best friends and their youthful idealism, and the separate paths they chose in the Iranian Revolution, repeatedly got me choked up. The story is tragic and horrifying, the espionage is nail-biting, and as the risks get more intense, I kept saying, "I can't believe this guy is doing this!"
I stayed up all night reading this, surprised the author waited over two decades to tell his story-- why not cash in on his heroism back in 1988?-- until I realized he's driven by one mission, which can be summed up as: "The governing mullahs in Iran cannot be negotiated with, because they've been explicitly planning Armageddon all along." If we can't trust this insider, who can we trust?
I'm not an effusive guy, just groggy from lack of sleep after I stayed up all night with this book. I dare you to read page one. Get hooked by this story and remind yourself what courage is really all about. Our nation should work for a free Iran, if only because the culture produces sterling characters like this author and his childhood friends.A Time to Betray: The Astonishing Double Life of a CIA Agent Inside the Revolutionary Guards of Iran Overview

Tick Tock (Michael Bennett) ReviewIt is sort of impossible to tell what James Patterson writes anymore. With his "co-author" mill, Patterson is more of a brand than an author at this point from what I can tell. But the Patterson trademarks are there, tiny chapters, low word count and stilted prose.
Every time I swear off Patterson forever, one of his books is offered free. So it is with Tick Tock which had a free preorder several months ago. The setup is fairly typical, with a serial killer recreating the murders of famous NYC serial killers. You may remember this plot line from the film "Copycat" which was made nearly two decades ago.
Our hero is Michael Bennett, a single father with 10 adopted children. The children are of all races and genders, however none of them are real characters. Often they are just a list of names on a page. They may as well be called "older boy number 3" for as much as they are developed.
Running parallel to the serial killer portion of the book is a family drama which is painful to read. The only reason it is included is to pad the book out to novel length instead of a novella. It involves the vacationing Bennett family fighting with bullies. These young teenagers apparently are well versed in wordplay and racial slurs, not to mention the Rainbow Coalition, a group that hasn't been particularly relevant in their lifetime.
As usual, there is a speckling of awkwardly shoehorned in pop culture references that distract from the proceedings as well.
As for the thriller itself, it is fairly standard, featuring the predictable Patterson switch where a new character is introduced to throw you off. There is also the almost sadistic pleasure taken in describing the murders. Also a fairly lame love triangle between Bennett, a FBI agent and his live in nanny.
As a final insult, the final scene between Bennett and the serial killer ends in a truly silly manner. Overall it is just not a satisfying effort.
