However, when his dream becomes reality, he finds that his life is now a constant struggle within himself: Jacob must renounce all he considers as "himself" and exist only as an extension to Lady Lyssa or he must walk away.
Lady Elyssa Yamato Amaterasu Wentworth is the last remaining vampire of royal blood. Her life is spent protecting herself from attacks from other vampires and keeping the façade of indifference to all the posturing of lesser vampires. The day she lets her guard down --even for a moment-- it could mean her death. However, these last years she has been fighting a foe that can't be defeated and must be faced alone, or so she thinks. When Jacob enters her world, Lady Lyssa has no idea how to take what he is clearly offering her; not without condemning Jacob to death. However, if Lady Lyssa does accept Jacob as her human servant, she must mold him to survive within the vampire world, something which might drive Jacob away form her.
When I was first offered this book for review I was delighted, as I had enjoyed books by Joey Hill in the past. The Vampire Queen's Servant is a book that is very well written and it evolves in the complex world of vampire society which is interesting in a horrifying way. However, I have to say that this book was difficult to for me to read for several reasons. The relationship that develops between Lady Lyssa and Jacob goes beyond your typical BDSM explored in mainstream erotica. In The Vampire Queen's Servant, we see Jacob struggle against becoming not much more than an obedient dog capable of performing complex tricks and providing sexual pleasure when Lady Lyssa demands. It also bothered me that rape was considered a spectator sport serving to arouse the watchers and physical torture (read broken bones and the like) was something utilized as easily as a hanky for no other purpose than proving who held the power. Jacob's thoughts at times seemed, to me, to reflect what we typically hear from abused spouses: it hurt, I don't like it, but I deserved it. I was completely unable to live the story from the character's perspective in order to understand their motivations. It was these things that made it very hard for me to care one way or another if Jacob and Lady Lyssa got a Happily Ever After. Also, the plot of the book moved so slowly that I found myself looking for reasons to put it down and at the same time I was desperate to finish it and therefore put myself out of my misery. I don't suggest that you pick up this book unless you are not squeamish and you enjoy extremely hardcore BDSM and senseless violence. The Vampire Queen's Servant is not a book for the faint of heart or those who enjoy fast paced books.

After Dark with a Scoundrel: Lords of Vice ReviewThis is the third book of "Lords of Vice" series, and there are seven of them. Lords of Vice are seven friends, very close, more like brothers. All seven are titled, rich, Rouges, Rakes and Scoundrels and very proud of it. Rules for these men are there in order to be broken.
We meet all of them, (Sin, Vane, Hunter, Saint, Frost, Dare and Reign) in "All Night with a Rogue", where we can't but fall in love with Sin, who is one sick Rogue. I just loved everything about that story. All the characters, the plot, pace, dialogue and humor. In this first book we get a glimpse of each of these men, and we are intrigued with each one. From the beginning, from the first moment our Hero looks into Juliana's eyes, we're hooked. We root for these two and we are rewarded with telling of a wonderful love story.
In the second book "Till Dawn with the Devil" the boys are back and Reign's story is just full of twists and turns and once more we're just lured into their world with a very compelling story in which one more Lord of Vice succumbs to love. Ms. Hawkins yet again did a wonderful job in telling the story of Reign and Sophia. All the characters were very well developed, and we've gotten to know more of our Lords and their lives, and at this point we are well into the series that we need to know more of Dare and Allegra. What happened, how it happened and why it happened?
"After Dark with a Scoundrel" opens with Regan, Frosts sister at fifteen who was basically brought up with the Lords of Vice as brothers. She had a fancy for one in particular, Dare. And here is where I encountered my first problem with this book. Dare is eight years older than Regan, and while at her twenty to his twenty eight, all is well and good, I had a big problem with a twenty three year old dallying with a fifteen year old sister of his best friend. I just didn't buy it. It felt wrong. On top of all that, Frost's only reaction upon finding those two kissing is to send Regan to a Boarding school. Dare gets off scot free. Fast forward, and I mean FAST, five years and we get to meet the little Regan at twenty, back from school and still what? In love, in infatuation with Dare that she set out to seduce him? Yet again, I'm not buying it. As for Dare, at sixteen he falls madly, passionately in love with Allegra, who is his age as well. He loves this girl with all of his heart and soul, and she cheats on him with his older brother Charles, (the future Duke), who has no qualms of getting the stupid chit pregnant and passing her off on his younger brother. When push came to shove, Allegra admits to Charles having fathered her child and in that moment Dare's heart breaks, but still he would have married her, however question still remains if he would have forgiven her.
Eleven years later, we see Dare living with the consequences of this triangle. Allegra's panting for him, demanding his presence, Mrs. Randall wants him for her lover, and Regan is after him also. What's a poor Scoundrel to do, but seduce his friend's sister and never even thinking much of the consequences of the liaison? NOT BUYING IT! NONE!
I wish this story was thought through better. It had so much more to give us. It was rushed, and it suffered. BIG TIME! I wanted to feel the pain of a boy who was mentally abused by his father as well as physically by his brother. A young man who was badly used by a girl who played him falls, who has broken his heart, and afterwards for years played on his sympathies. I wanted to know that at twenty three he knew better than to kiss a girl that was vulnerable and innocent. Yes, I know. He's a Scoundrel. But even though he is, I needed him to have honor. To have shame. He showed none. Frost baffled me as well. He finds out that his best friend takes his sisters virginity, and he coldly throws him out. Really? Seriously? That's it? NOT BUYING IT!
I've anticipated this book for a while and it let me down. I expected more of this story. Dare's story should have been as compelling as the other two. I will buy the next four in the series. At this point I'm invested in these men. I like them. I want to meet the women they fall in love with. I also want to let Ms. Hawkins know that she can do better than this book. I know it. I read the first two books and I LOVED both.

In Eternal Hunger Cynthia Eden returns to her super sexy shifters! I love her shifter romances and this book did not disappoint. It grabbed me from the first page and did not stop! Cynthia Eden's paranormal world is complex and absorbing. If you are already a fan of her books you will have to purchase this book to add to your collection. If you are a new reader, be prepared for a fun, smooth read.
This story starts with Jude Donovan, a tough no-nonsense bounty hunter who ALWAYS gets his prey. But his latest capture brings with it trouble packaged in the new, ultra attractive Assistant D.A., Erin Jerome. All of a sudden he is bent on hunting an all together different type of quarry. Jude immediately senses something different about Erin and his inner animal wants her for his alone.
But Erin is no easy prey. She has sworn off shifters of any sort in her life. Erin is deceptively strong and no one even a shifter is going to push her around. Even if he does have a rough sort of charm that she finds attractive. Starting afresh in a new town, the last thing she wants are any complications. Which means keeping a low profile. And she knows a shifter will just bring her trouble. Unfortunately, her past and Jude's collide as Erin is targeted and Jude becomes her bodyguard. But Erin's ultimate test is taking the final risk and believing in herself.
This book was sheer pleasure from start to finish. Cynthia Eden is one of my favorite authors. I am hooked by her series because each of her books reveals something new about her world and her characters are always sympathetic and likeable. It is difficult to describe how enjoyment I feel every time I read one her books. Her ability to write a fast paced novel that is: fun to read, easy to get involved in and always satisfying. The mystery behind the Erin's past and a string of murders are engrossing, as unexpected changes make for a thrilling and riveting read. The engaging characters are genuine and extraordinary and I often felt a part of the story. Along with Jude there is a cast of his bounty hunter colleagues who I hope will be making appearances of their own.

Cezar is also holding a secret from Anna, namely that she's destined to become an "oracle" or a member of the exclusive high demon council. Only those with elemental powers are asked to serve on the oracle council. The problem is will Anna survive Morganna to become an oracle and more importantly will the council allow Anna to continue to love her vampire who has become more important to her than she could ever imagine? Filled with vamps, deadly fairies, imps, Arthurian legends, and one adorable and irritating French gargoyle named Levet these books are fantastic and Ms. Ivy is a terrific writer. After the Night ReviewI read this book for the first time two years ago and have read it three times since then. I read and enjoy everything Linda writes and in my opinion this one is her best effort and Gray is her most romatic hero ever. Faith has been in love with Gray since she was a child. Although he finds Faith attractive, he is tortured by the fact that his beloved father ran off with Faith's mother and neither have been heard from for years. The night Gray realizes his father is gone, he evicts Faith and her family from the shack where they live on his family's land and runs them out of town.Years later Faith returns and Gray is determined to run her off again, but he cannot deny his attraction to her and admires the way she will not back down from him. In a small town where his wealthy family "owns" just about everything and everyone Gray makes sure the local supermarket and gas station will not sell to Faith so she must purchase food and gas at a nearby town. This from a ruthless hero who is at her doorstep 10 minutes after she phones him for help, terrified after finding roadkill in her mailbox. Believe me you'll love this book. Linda also writes the best love scenes. The porch scene.......what can be said that already hasn't been said about it except for the fact that it has to be one of the most erotic love scenes ever written. You'll laugh your way through the public restroom love scene and I also enjoyed Faith's massage from Gray on her custom made kitchen table. This is a very sensual and sexy read as only Linda can write. Handle this one with asbestos gloves. After The Night is my all-time favorite and I wish I could rate it ten stars.After the Night Overview

Dragon Actually (Dragon Kin, Book 1) ReviewI loved the main story Dragon Actually (which started out as a short story originally epublished as To Challenge a Dragon). This dragonshifter tale had all of the trademark brashness, humor and steamy intensity you would expect from Aiken a Shelley Laurenston alto ego.
If you're a fan of any of the author's other books you'll be pleased to see how well Aiken's trademark uber-alpha female lead translates to the medieval time frame of the book. Annwyl the Bloody is fatally wounded and outnumbered but still fighting to take as many of her vile brother's warriors along with her through death's door. Just about the time the Annwyl is about to lose her head, literally, her foes' smug satisfaction at their looming victory turns to terror and flaming death courtesy of the horned black dragon on whose doorstep Annwyl is dying. Much to the dragon Fearghus' the surprise, the bloody woman meets his fierce dragon's gaze without fear and her bravery intrigues him enough than instead of making her a tasty snack, he brings her into his lair and sees to her healing. As time goes by the dour dragon hermit, who preferred a quiet solitary life, is amused and captivated by the bold, fearless woman. When Annwyl begins to heal, Fearghus provides an irritating but powerful Knight to help Annwyl hone the battle skills which will allow her to defeat her odious abusive sibling. Annwyl spends her days in bruising training with her helpful but annoying `adversary' and her nights talking with Fearghus, torn between the powerful lust she feels for the Knight and the comfort and friendship she feels for the dragon.
Annwyl's `two' relationships are what really make this story. Her relationship with the despised but oh so attractive Knight was combustible, laden with sexual tension and with verbal sparring (along with some physical sparring too), but where her relationship with the Knight burned hot and fast, with Fearghus it was a slowly building deeper connection, as the two let down their guards and shared themselves in a way that neither had allowed before. Adding even more fun to the story, Dragon Actually is chockfull of supporting dragon characters, many of Fearghus' fabulous siblings turn up to help or to stir up mischief, most all of them deserve stories of their own.
The second story Flames in Chains, also previously epublished, was the story of Fearghus' parents `courtship'. Fearghus' father Bercelek, a fearsome battle dragon, has always had a soft spot for the dragon Princess Rhiannon who loathes him. Fearghus was great, in his unrelenting campaign to win the mate who is now within his grasp and the advantage is finally his since she's stuck in human form and can't shift to dragon in order to flee him. This story had some great moments and Bercelek's odd ball dragon parents and siblings, like his children in the previous story, were a kick. But I didn't like Flames and Chains as well as the first story. If you are an erotic reader my nits with the story won't bother you, but an increase in the frequency and coarsenss of the language used, along with the chains and spanking, though both of these were very mild by erotica standards, knocked this one down a notch for me where Dragon Actually managed to toe, but not cross, the line for me.
Overall though I still will be checking out Aiken's next book About A Dragon (Dragon Kin, Book 2) (turns out this is a reissue of Laurenston's The Distressing Damsel: Book 2 of the Dragon Kin) in which the first - of hopefully many - of Fearghus' siblings get their turn in the spot light. If you like Dragon Actually be sure to check out Aiken's pride and pack stories written as Shelley Laurenston, they are also full of pushy alpha shifter males (lion/wolf) claiming their oh so dangerous mates and though not as violent, the stories share the same fast paced humorous tone as these two stories.

I love it when a book surprises me by being really, really, really good. DARKNESS DAWNS is deeply romantic, daringly sensual, with dark paranormal characters that make it nearly impossible to put down.
Paranormal romances are notorious for creating unbelievably dark yet desirable heroes who inexplicably fall for whiney, immature TSTL heroines. While the former is also true in DARKNESS DAWNS with the character of Rowland, the later couldn't be further from the truth when it comes to Sarah.
These two are a perfect match. The first time they meet beautifully establishes their characters: She is strong and resourceful without being unreasonable or worse unbelievable, he is stoic and brooding without being detached or completely inhuman. I totally bought the rather quick emotions that developed and then appreciated the way Duvall slowed it down from the typical PNR pace.
And I can't not talk about the vampire mythology. Vampires and Immortals both drink blood and are preternaturally fast and strong, but Immortals are immortal and carry over various gifts (healing, telekinesis etc.) from before they were bitten, whereas, Vampires descend quickly into madness and bloodlust within years of their turning. There are plenty of unanswered questions raised about the true origin of Immortals and a few other supernatural phenomenon that only make me that much more eager for the next Immortal Guardians book.
Fans of J. R. Ward's Black Dagger Brotherhood series will love this new series about a dangerous group of Immortals who battle against vampires. I'm already trying to guess which Immortal will get his story in the next book (I'm hoping for the leader Seth, but I'll take any of them) when it comes out in December 2011.
