Monster Hunter Vendetta (Baen Fantasy) ReviewMonster Hunter Vendetta picks up Owen Pitt's saga a few months after the events of the first book, Monster Hunter International. This time Owen is the hunted as much as he is hunter. The Dread Overlord (a sort of top-of-the-heap Cthulu monster) has put the word out to his minions on Earth that he wants Owen Pitt delivered to him in his dimension for torture and death. He blames Owen for what the Feds did to him during the last battle described in the first novel (something involving a tactical nuke), when Owen literally saved the world.
This book fills in a lot of the back-story of the MHI fictional universe without getting in the way of the non-stop action. For a new writer Larry Correia has great story-telling skills as he pulls the reader from one chapter to the next. Don't start this book on a night when you need to get some sleep. One could easily start this on a Friday night and finish it by Sunday.
We learn more of the family history of the Shackleford's, four generations of which have owned and operated MHI. Some really big secrets of some agents of Monster Control Bureau (MCB) get spilled here. It does nothing to alleviate MCB's image as an evil-twin version of Men In Black. Even worse its top agent is a bloody-minded egomaniac who doesn't care if MHI is wiped out as long as he accomplishes his mission.
The author does a great job of building up the powers of the villain, a British necromancer, to the point where you doubt that anything to stop him. The key is to make it believable when our hero does beat him and comes home in one-piece to marry the girl he loves - another monster hunter who shoots a rifle better than Owen. Good looks, brave and a great shot. That is my idea of a 21st century heroine/love-interest.
This is a fun book with an adult view of good vs. evil, in stark contrast to the action movies of today that have stories at the level of comic books, even when they are not based on comic books. I'm glad to report that the evil villains are truly evil and not mis-guided or victims of a troubled childhood. The author's deft touch shows in the depiction of some of the "good guys" who cut corners while trying to save the world. We still don't like the guys from MCB, but some of them are more understandable after this book.
It's a successful second book in the series because new readers can enjoy it before reading the first book but it still moves the saga forward for people who have already "discovered" MHI. That's why I give it Five Stars.

Monster Hunter Alpha ReviewLarry Correia is creating a trademark of ingenuity, innovation, and an absolutely wicked sense of humor. The same things that made the prior books in the series, "Monster Hunter International" (Not your standard elves.) and "Monster Hunter Vendetta" (Stand back! I'm going to fight magic with science.) return in hurricane force.
In this case, the book is more of a solo dip into hellfire for one of the major players in the first two books: Earl Harbinger, MHI's operations chief. He's the oldest living werewolf in the world, and one of the few who is NOT on the U.S. Government's "Kill On Sight" list.
The action in the novel shifts a bit between who Harbinger is now, and the events and people and monsters out of his past who have gathered in Michigan to try and kill him. There's a fine irony in the oldest living werewolf having to be the world's best werewolf destroyer, but Harbinger and the people of the besieged town in which he finds himself stranded must meet the challenge, or the plague of werewolves will spread...
I won't spoil the wonderfully ingenious ways they defend themselves, but I will say my jaw dropped when I realized just what Harbinger and party were up to, and Correia's magnificent two-word description of the results still has me laughing like hell, three months after I read the electronic ARC of this awesome book.
One warning, do not drink anything while actively reading. Stop, sip, swallow and THEN continue, or you risk a very soggy book.

It's your average, everyday Wednesday evening; I had just stopped by to pick up the latest issue of the Wellsboro Gazette. Suddenly, I found myself able to fulfill the American dream. No, not the one with the nude roller derby girls, the other "American" dream. I got to run over my boss. Understand, I felt obligated to burn hot rubber across his hairy back. No, I didn't wake up that morning and plan on killing my boss with my Subaru. It's really much more complicated than that. I would never have considered doing something that sounded so crazy. Heck, I work in a bookstore. My idea of danger is getting a paper cut. I didn't want to save the world. I didn't want to have to replace my headlight. I didn't want my insurance rates to skyrocket. I didn't want to know my boss was a werewolf...
It turns out that monsters are real, and that's why I found myself devouring Monster Hunter International by Larry Correia. Creatures from myth, legend, and B-movies are out there. Lurking in the shadows, seeking our destruction, or just plain hungry. Monster Hunter International is the number one agency for eradication of evil.
Our story starts with one Owen Zastava Pitt. He's your average, everyday working stiff. He just wants to work hard, get himself a wife and 2.5 kids, and settle in the suburbs, but when his boss literally tries to bite his head off, Owen is thrust into a world that he never knew existed - a world where monsters are exist, and there is good money to be made killing them. Welcome to Monster Hunter International.
MHI,a remarkable group of misfits that has banded together. They do more than dare to raise a candle to the darkness. They pack napalm-fed flamethrowers and lots of firepower. There's specialized body armor, big guns with unusual ammunition, and bloodsucking fiends. You'll also find some likable, well-developed heroes that bleed, and a full-speed action yarn that's funny as Hades.
I picked up this first novel because it sounded like a fun, fast read, and it is. Larry is a certified weapon instructor and it shows in his writing. He knows guns and weapons and he likes to blow things up, and have a lot of fun doing it. He also loves B movies, and has a twisted sense of humor, and it all makes for a highly entertaining read. It's not perfect. There are some rough spots, and at 452 pages, it's a little longer than is needed. The action slows down after a great intro that grabs your attention, but quickly jumps back to the fight. If you like SF, military fiction, or horror, you'll find yourself staying up late at night to finish, and anticipating the next novel. You aren't going to find MHI on the New York Times bestseller list, or Oprah any time soon, but maybe she should lock and load and lighten up...
