Mark of the Demon (Kara Gillian, Book 1) ReviewDetective Kara Gillian is a bit of a loner because of her secret life as a demon summoner. It's hard to get close to someone when you have a summoning circle drawn on your basement floor and you leave your candles and tools laying around for anyone to see. When not summoning demons, Kara works as a Detective for the Violent Crimes unit. She is recently promoted out of Property Crimes and is very excited to be working some homicide cases.
During a summoning to complete her Summoner Training, the wrong Demon comes through the portal and into Kara's house. He doesn't seem all that bad, especially when he shows Kara what she's been missing from not having a man lately. But after her encounter, Kara realizes what a huge mistake she has made and that this Demon is not one to play around with. When he starts invading her dreams and the line between reality and dreaming is confused, Kara starts to regret ever doing the summoning in the first place.
A serial killer dubbed The Symbol Man killed thirteen people when Kara first joined the police academy. He was never apprehended and now three years later, he has begun his killing spree once again. Kara has always been interested in the case since first sensing arcane power around one of the deceased bodies. She has studied the case files and is the most educated on The Symbol Man out of everyone in the police force. So when Kara is given the lead on the case for her first job in Violent Crimes, she is thrilled to be given such a big opportunity to prove herself as a Detective.
The FBI has joined forces on this case and with them comes a gorgeous but obnoxious man named Agent Kristoff. Kara works side by side with him while trying to keep her knowledge of the occult under wraps so everyone doesn't peg her as a crazy satanic worshipper.
When the case turns out to definitely involve the world of the occult, Kara is at a crossroads on what to do. Does she keep her occult knowledge and position as a demon summoner a secret and try to solve the case herself or does she put her trust in a member of the FBI in the hopes that he doesn't think she's a lunatic? If Kara doesn't entrust in someone for some help, more people could end up killed. Will Kara's decision turn deadly or will she solve the case and come out alive?
Mark of the Demon is a delightful collaboration of genres including urban fantasy, suspense, romance and police procedural. Debut author Diana Rowland takes everything that I love in a book and puts it all together to write an outstanding novel. Take a dash of Charmed mixed with some Dexter and you have Mark of the Demon.
Mark of the Demon demands to be read in one sitting and is impossible to put down. There are some graphic scenes in this book so it is definitely not for the faint of heart. I enjoy the gritty and grimy aspects and was indeed shocked and scared while reading this book and it's not easy to scare me! Mark of the Demon is a breath taking, heart stopping, white knuckler thriller that grabbed me by the throat and didn't let go! Run and get this book when it releases June 23rd. The next book, Blood of the Demon is due out January 26, 2010.Mark of the Demon (Kara Gillian, Book 1) Overview

Certain Prey ReviewI have enjoyed all of the Sanford "Prey" novels, being caught right off the bat with the first one many years ago and this is my favorite.
As opposed to many of the books out this summer this is not about a serial killer, but a contract killer and the character of Clara Rinker is wonderful - smart, a killer with a conscience. And to come at it from both sides, know the plot and the killer up front, but see how the police and FBI figure it out. You wonder in real life how much of crime solving is luck. Probably more than any of us would like to realize.
I was also happy that Lucas seemed not to be in a depressed state. What a pleasant change. I realize that he doesn't have a woman in his life - but neither is he depressed or suicidal because he doesn't. Thank you - sometimes it is possible to be happy and productive alone.
I do miss the character in this book of his friend the nun - but hopefully she will turn up in future books, she's wonderful.
Sanford is very good at giving the minutae of an investigation but keeping the pace taut and the characters smart. Excellent reading as always.Certain Prey Overview

Caribbean Moon (A Manny Williams Thriller) ReviewCARIBBEAN MOON by RICK MURCER introduces Detective Manny Williams & his wife Louise, his partner, Sophie Lee (an Asian-American), her husband Randy, Chief Gavin Crosby, his wife Stella, their son Mike (a Rookie Cop) and his bride Lexy. The District Attorney Liz Casnnovsky & her husband Lynn, CSI Alex Downs & his wife Barbara. All are members of the Lansing Police Department (as in Lansing, Michigan), except Liz, the DA and her stockbroker husband, Lynn. They are acommpaning Mike & Lexy Crosby on their Honeymoon cruise aboard the Carosel's OCEAN DUCHESS to San Juan, Puerto Rico and the caribbean islands.
While docked in San Juan, a grizzly murder is committed in a San Juan hotel, which brings in Detective Christina Perez of the San Juan Police Department and FBI Special Agents Corner & Tucker. Soon, another murder occurs on board the Ocean Duchess and the MO is strikingly similar to a case the Lansing Detectives had worked and solved, with the killer in prison. Doesn't take long for the Lansing cops to be fully engaged with Chief of Security Richardson, a retired NYPD Detective with an alcohol problem, and Captain Vicente Serafini, the Ship's Captain. As you read this carefully plotted novel you are gripped in suspense as you scroll down your Kindle. The scenes are masterfully and vividly laid out, you feel the Caribbean brerezes, smell the coconuts, the rich Pina Coladas and Cuba Libres. You get to know the characters indepth, and you like them. Then Robert Peppercorn appears as he is released from prison. You learn first-hand from him that he is now Eli Jenkins. He next appears in San Juan, and you learn he is a passenger on the Ocean Duchess . . . with a score to settle with the Lansing cops. The plot thickens and you are kept on the edge of your seat as bodies start showing up in rapid succession. Soon, the ship's Captain allows the Lansing Cops to be part of the task force, headed by FBI Special Agent Corner to conduct an all out search for the killer.
The ending will catch you totally off-guard! I highly recommend this FIVE STAR novel and guarantee you will be looking forward, as I am to DECEITFUL MOON by RICK MURCER. Detective Manny Williams and his partner Sophie Lee take us on another ride in a taught detective novel.

AuthorCaribbean Moon (A Manny Williams Thriller) OverviewThis is written in the tradition of Connelly, Patterson of old, and JA Konrath. Small-town detective/workaholic, Manny Williams is thrilled with the prospect of finally taking the long-awaited vacation he had promised his wife, Louise. The couple's exotic getaway begins in sunny San Juan, Puerto Rico, by attending the June wedding of a fellow Lansing police officer, followed with an incredible week-long Southern Caribbean cruise on the glamorous Ocean Duchess. Tropical paradise appears to be a perfect recipe for desperately needed R and R...until the first dead body. A bizarre, seemingly random murder in their posh San Juan Hotel, and the heinous cruise ship deaths of two of Lansing's law enforcement family, brings Manny, and his unique skills, out of cruise mode and head-long into the FBI-led investigation. Manny soon discovers that in this killer's twisted perception nothing is off limits, prompting a race against time that could cost him everything. If you like edge-of-your-seat thrillers laced with humor, you'll love this!
