Juliet Immortal ReviewDie hard Shakespeare fans will probably cringe when they see the premise of author Stacey Jay's JULIET IMMORTAL. The well-known tragedy of Romeo Montague and Juliet Capulet, members of rival families who meet and fall in love, is a story which has been retold in different forms and manners. But the truth according to this book is that Romeo was the source of their demise... to gain immortality. Now, they battle for the souls of lovers on Earth in the never ending war between good and evil.
I was interested in this idea. How could an author possibly take Romeo and Juliet's tale and create a supernatural element? And being from California, it's nice to read about cities in your home state. Well, the idea sounded fairly standard: instead of the rival families, Romeo and Juliet are now part of warring factions-- he for the Mercenaries of the Apocalypse, she for the Ambassadors of Light. There are some fascinating ideas about the two sides, but their history, however, is confusing and a little comical. It took me about an hour to fully immerse myself in the mythology. The names alone require patience.
Poor Romeo is reduced to a blathering, over the top villain who likes to taunt Juliet. Juliet was a more complex character. Through her, Ms. Jay deals with issues some girls deal with: fitting in, finding yourself, and becoming a strong person. Juliet is capable of holding her own in a fight (which is refreshing considering the amount of female characters written who have the male lead fight for them), but when she meets a boy named Ben whom she feels an instant connection with, she becomes interested much like she was in Romeo in the play. I didn't understand their instant attraction; it felt like it was plunked into the story because there had to be a love interest.
The narration flows, yet it does have the tendency to be just as over-dramatic as Juliet's crazy counterpart. This feels like an extension of the play: Romeo and Juliet Immortal.
If you're a Shakespearean Romeo and Juliet fan, tread VERY cautiously with this one. If you're looking for an entertaining albeit contrived read and can digest some heavy-handed material, this is worth a look.Juliet Immortal Overview

Anna Dressed in Blood ReviewCas (Theseus Cassio) Lowood kills ghosts. Not just any ghosts; only the ghosts that harm other people. He inherited the ability (and the athame necessary to do the work) from his father, who was killed mysteriously when Cas was seven. Now, 10 years later, Cas has come to Thunder Bay, Ontario, in search of a ghost named Anna Dressed in Blood. Anna, as a young lady, was murdered in 1958 and now she haunts the house in which she lived during her life, and kills anyone foolish enough to come inside. Until Cas came inside - for some reason, she spared his life. Cas develops a fascination for Anna - can he, along with his new friends Thomas and Carmel, do what he came to do and stop Anna from killing?
I really enjoyed this book - it was well-written, spooky and engaging. However, I was stupefied to discover that it was rated for "young adults." There is a good deal of very intense gore and a lot of swearing - the f-bomb was dropped twice just in chapter two, and that was a short chapter. I have no problem with such, and I imagine a lot of "young people" today don't either, but I would also imagine that their parents would have a problem with it. So, I'm warning anyone that might be bothered by this - lots of gore and some swearing to boot.
That said, I would recommend this book - I liked it a great deal and I think many people would. Give it a look if the above caveat doesn't apply to you!Anna Dressed in Blood Overview

Dust & Decay ReviewI absolutely loved Rot & Ruin. It was an astounding zombie YA series starter, with just the right mix of the horrors that men can do verses the zombie carnage. There was a thought-provoking focus on the fact that zombies used to be people, and therefore they should be respected for what they were as well as feared for what they now are - something a lot of zombie stories fail to take into account.
Dust & Decay keeps the theme in the same general vein, but having already established that zombies deserve respect, spends more time on thrilling action and the atrocities humans subject each other too. After month of training, Tom, Benny, Nix and Lilah are finally heading out to search for the plane they saw in Rot & Ruin. Having trouble saying goodbye, Chong heads out with them for the first leg of the journey, only to prove that he may be smart, but really isn't the outdoorsy type.
Problems abound. Life and death situations are faced. Evil men prove more dangerous than herds of zombies. Love of all kinds is found, tested, strengthened and cherished many times over.
While Dust & Decay is horrific and terrifying, thrilling and action-packed, what the reader will be surprised to find is how emotional the book - and the entire series - is. The book sucks you in, the characters get under your skin, and you won't be able to pull yourself away from the page. Dust & Decay is an emotional thrill-ride that will leave you shaken for a long time to come. Zombie perfection.Dust & Decay Overview
