How to Ruin Your Boyfriend's Reputation ReviewCamo is back in fashion for the summer, and Amy Nelson-Barak is ready to show off her style. Not in the states, however, but all the way in Israel.
After learning that her boyfriend, Avi, has to stay back for more training, Amy, along with her friends Miranda, Jessica, and the infamous Nathan, have all signed up for military boot camp that just so happens to be at the same base where Avi is currently training. SURPRISE!
Amy's plan is simple: go to boot camp, have the fun which the brochure advertises, and spend time with her Avi. But Amy should know that summers never turn out the way she expects.
Once there, Amy notices the lack of indoor plumbing, gourmet food, or ideal mattresses. It gets worse. They actually want her to train like how the real soldiers would! Even though the whole ordeal may not be Amy's cup of tea, she not only wants to make Avi proud, but she wants to prove her dad wrong. She vows to show him that she can survive without all of her necessities from back home - well, with the exception of make-up, hair straighteners, and designer sunglasses.
Already hating the environment, Amy is glad to finally see Avi, who just so happens to be the leader of her group. Little does she know that Avi has to keep their relationship professional, meaning they still won't have time to be alone together.
When things get bad, it has to get better... right? So what if Amy has to deal with bad meals and cold showers. The pretty girls there do not bother her either; she's the one that has Avi. Seems like the only thing that can bother Amy is a little secret that Avi has been keeping from her, that could just possibly tear them apart. Whoever said karma wasn't a big meanie?
Simone Elkeles makes each installment of this series better than the previous one. HOW TO RUIN YOUR BOYFRIEND'S REPUTATION is laugh-out-loud hilarious, all while Amy Nelson-Barak stays true to her character and true to her culture.
What I like best about this installment is that Simone Elkeles lets us into the minds and thoughts of soldiers and how they are proud to fight for their country and freedom. She delves into the misconceptions and beauty of Israel and lets us all see what a wonderful country it is. Amy Nelson-Barak is back, and this time she's a "warrior woman!"

Leaving Paradise ReviewI read this book a few weeks ago and I have to tell you: I haven't been able to get it out of my mind. The story itself is simple: two people, bonded together by a tragedy, shunned by the rest of the world, who turn to each other.
The execution is anything but simple. Caleb and Maggie are both complex, real people who you in-turn, love and get infuriated at. They are people, not characters. This events are something that can actually happen, not just story. The ending is satisfying, a real ending, not a contrived, happy one. I feel like I can pick up the paper and read about an incident like this today, that's how real this story is.
Maggie's good-girl and Caleb's bad-boy personalties are an immediate catalyst for a lot of great conflict, misunderstandings and of course, excellent chemistry. I can see this becoming a movie...it has that kind of lasting visual impressions.
Maggie's hopes and dreams of leaving Paradise behind and Caleb's hopes of a "normal" life with his family, girlfriend and "the guys" are dashed quickly in the story. You realize that these people don't have anyone who understands them. Their story together is haunting and devastating and you feel your heart break for these two teenagers who have looked things in the eye that most adults would have a hard time with.
I loved the alternatiing points of view...one chapter I hated Caleb and felt so sorry for Maggie, the next chapter I HATED Kendra and felt sorry for Caleb...my emotions were in a turmoil throughout this story. Like all great books, i read this in one sitting and all I have to say is: WELL DONE Ms. Elkeles. This is not your standard fluffy HS adventure. This is what happens when HS goes wrong, leaving behind repurcussions that last a lifetime.
I read this book and Jodi Picoult's NINETEEN MINUTES around the same time. The themes are similar...when ordinary people go very wrong. I loved both...and I will not call Simone, the Jodi Picoult of YA.
Thanks for the great read Simone. I hope we see Maggie and Caleb again one day :)

Perfect Chemistry ReviewAlex Fuentes is gang member from the south side of Fairfield, and Brittany Ellis is a privileged girl from the north. Each have a status and a reputation to uphold at Fairfield High, but they also have secrets--for Alex, it's the desire to break free from the Latino Blood gang and his tough image and succeed in life. Brittany's life may look perfect from the outside, but at home, her parents are struggling to deal with Brittany's handicapped sister.

Brittany and Alex are on the opposite ends of the social scene spectrum, but that doesn't stop their chemistry teacher from making them lab partners. It's hate at first sight for both, but as they learn more about each other and slowly move beyond the stereotypes, they'll discover completely new people.

Perfect Chemistry is the classic love story of two utterly different people falling for each other, despite their initial loathing. Elkeles breathes new life into the old tale, giving it a fresh teenage perspective by interchangeably writing in both Alex and Brittany's point of view, keeping Perfect Chemistry fresh and evenly paced. The plot is realistic and sweet without being cliché, and the dialogue is perfect; gritty, and genuine. Each side is portrayed objectively, and though Alex and Brittany's relationship does move at a fast pace, their thoughts, insecurities, hang-ups, and urges all ring true and are easy for nearly any teen to identify with.

Though it is an important part of the book, the romance doesn't dominate it: strong themes of acceptance, diversity, courage, and independence are also present, making for a powerful read that boldly faces the consequences of gang life, and offers an unflinching look at how difficult it is to extricate oneself from it. Elkeles has created a riveting and strong novel with an important and relevant message and a romance hotter than any exothermic reaction.Perfect Chemistry Overview

Chain Reaction (Perfect Chemistry Novels) ReviewFor the record, I fully blame Simone Elkeles for my obsession with the young adult genre. Before I got my hands on a copy of Perfect Chemistry, I thought YA novels were strictly PG rated and the most passionate displays of affection was a line saying, "We made out last night." Nothing was ever discussed in detail, let alone the smoldering way Elkeles writes a love scene. As if that wasn't enough, she doesn't flinch when tackling tough subjects like gang violence and teen sexuality.
I fell in love with this series three years ago, and this final installment was just as hot and sultry as the previous two books. Luis, being the youngest, was so much fun. He didn't have the jaded cynicism his older brothers had going into this book. He was a reckless, fun guy who liked to make people laugh. This is what made the revelation about his past all the more saddening (sorry, that's all I'll say - read the book to find out what happens).
I wasn't all that crazy about Nikki. I understood she got hurt in a major way by a major creep, but I felt some times she took her mistrust in Luis too far. Towards the end I warmed up to her, but for a little while I thought she needed a good slap. I did, however, adore her friends Derek and Kendall. For some reason I looked forward to any scene they were in.
I felt parts of this book, especially the end, moved too fast. I would have liked a little more filling in the Latino Blood storyline and Luis's reactions to what he discovered. I felt that came and went too fast. Then again, it might just be me with a serious case of the Oliver Twists, making grabby hands and begging for some more because I knew this series was coming to a close.
It could be argued that Elkeles's books in this series are formulaic. After reading the first, the other two play out the same way, but I went in expecting that. There are no real surprised, but I recently saw on the news that people are almost 40% happier when they read a book or see a movie already knowing how it will end. This book is a classic example of that: I love knowing that in the Simone Elkeles's world love truly can conquer all.

Lola and the Boy Next Door ReviewExcuse me while I fan-girl...
Okay. I'm finished. Not really, but I can't stop smiling! Lola and the Boy Next Door had even more hype leading up to its release than Anna and the French Kiss. I didn't think Lola could live up to Anna, but I was so excited when I got this book in the mail today that I ripped--really, I almost got a paper cut in my rush to open it--right into it. I finished this book in just one sitting.
First things first, I saw that it was signed to me, because my mother is amazing sometimes and ordered me a signed copy from Asheville, North Carolina, from the Lola book release party that I couldn't go to because of family problems. Fan-girl moment again, sorry--but second to that--I jumped right into Lola's world, and I fell in love.
In a way, Lola had me missing Anna. Anna was such a funny, quiet character, and I loved her for it, while Lola was out there and in your face from the first page. But I grew to have a certain fondness of Lola that I only had a few times with Anna and that sealed the deal on this book for me.
Lola is that one girl you see from time-to-time, who is dressed so ridiculously that you can't help but to smile. Lola was out-going, brave, daring, and even a bit too much, if there is ever such a thing. But after a few pages, I loved her and wished she was my new best friend, and clothing designer.
Stephanie Perkins is amazing. She has blown me away and has left me dying for more; just like when I finished Anna and the France Kiss, I have a longing to be in the world her characters live in, and don't even get me started on Cricket Bell!
Cricket was, to put it simply, amazing. He was gorgeous, sweet (God--he was so darn sweet!) gorgeous, caring, gorgeous, smart... did I say gorgeous? Stop it, Angel--you're embarrassing yourself!
Cricket was the perfect male lead for our crazy-design-loving Lola. Throughout the book, Stephanie Perkins let us see how deeply he cares for Lola, and how Lola's feelings of hurt, embarrassment, abandonment, and anger of the past, slowly start to evolve into the love she once had for him--the boy next door who only lives there sometimes.
I know it's hard to believe, but Cricket has actually taken my heart. Sorry, Etienne St. Clair! I didn't think it was possible to love a character as much as I did Cricket, and if you want to make things better--St. Clair and Cricket. Together, in the same scene--talking! Interacting! I know! Anna and St. Clair make a few brief cameos in Lola's story, and I have to say that I loved every minute of it.
Have in mind that this book is heavier than Anna. Emotionally speaking, I was way more invested than while I was reading Anna. I felt the characters had more depth, the issues were bigger--the world was seen through clear, bright eyes the whole time I was reading and I really connected with them. I actually loved every single character--even Lola's bad boy rocker boyfriend, Max--at least, I did until halfway through the book. You'll just have to read it and find out why!
But--oh, no--did I just `but' in this review? Did I just put a `but' in here?!--I wish we could have seen more of Calliope, Cricket's twin sister. I loved her character even though she came across as snobby and indifferent most of the time when it came to Lola, I understood her. I have a brother who I am very protective over as well, so I know what it's like when you don't want your brother to get hurt. I can only hope we see more of her in the near future.
All I can say is that this book is simply amazing. Is it better than Anna? Some say yes, some say no, but I am one of those who say `yes' a million times. From Lola's crazy outfits, to Crickets blue eyes, to her best friend Lindsey and her love for CSI and Nancy Drew-- I fell in love. It depends on what you like, but something tells me Lola is not a girl you will be forgetting about anytime soon.Lola and the Boy Next Door Overview

Half-Blood: A Covenant Novel ReviewMy summary:
Alexandria or Alex is seventeen-years-old and having a harder time than most teens. Her mother just died before her eyes. Her real dad has been gone for a while. Her step-dad - well let's just say she doesn't trust him. Chasing her way back to the covenant with daimons hot on her trail, she has very few choices. Her only option is to return to the covenant that her mother forced her to leave without explanation 3 years ago. The covenant won't be happy about the absence. They may train her to fight daimons or drug her into servitude. Oh and then there is the little issue of Alex being a half-blood. A mix of Hematoi and mortal, she is only good for fighting or serving as far as the covenant is concerned. Add the gorgeous Aiden, who just happens to be a pure blood and completely off limits to any half-blood, and Alex is really having a hard time. Can she follow the rules and control her crush on Aiden long enough to become a sentinel so she can fight the daimons that killed her mom? Or will her reckless character cause her to fail in her duty and face a future far worse?
My thoughts:
5 stars - A must read
The world that Jennifer creates in Half-Blood is unique in the world of angels and demons. The mixture of aether in the blood determines the class in this society. Pure bloods are full of aether (from the Gods) and have power over one of the four elements. They also had the ability to use compulsions to get others to do what they want. Pure bloods are treated almost as royalty where half-bloods are second class. They have very little aether and no power over the elements. They are faster and stronger than regular human and they can see through the magic to identify pure bloods that have been turned into daimons. Thus they are good fighters so if they are lucky they get to be trained as guards or sentinels. Otherwise they are drugged into servitude. I loved this world not only because it is unique but also because it has many compelling aspects to it. The classing of people has never worked in history so I suspect it will come back to bite this society as well. I am excited to see that happen.
The characters in the book are dynamic and real. Alex has a very strong personality. She doesn't do well with rules yet she lives in a situation that could blow up in her face at any moment if she doesn't follow those rules. Despite this, Alex remains a strong, reckless, and compelling. Aiden is super hot. His pure blood status keeps him off limits to Alex but that doesn't mean she isn't looking. He is strong, mysterious, wounded, and determined to help her. I love his fierce patience with her and his quiet manner. Caleb is the biggest supporting character and he is a great friend to Alex. At first I thought he was a love interest but it became clear quickly that he is just a very supportive friend. Seth comes into the story mid-book and is quite the mystery. There is so much about him that we don't know yet. He is the Apollyon, a half-blood who controls all four elements and more. An incredible fighter, he is a daimons worst nightmare but he has been called back from fighting. He's as interested as anyone why that is the case. There certainly is some strange connection between Alex and him and I love how he gets under Alex's skin. I'm sure there's a lot more to come from Seth.
While the ending isn't a cliffhanger (thank heavens - can my heart take any more of those), things are far from settled. I can't wait for the next book. The problem with reading books before they actually come out is having to wait even longer for the next one.Half-Blood: A Covenant Novel Overview

Now that I know CC Hunter also writes under Christie Craig I completely understand why I adore these books so much, I LOVE her!!! I read Born at Midnight because of the price but was pulled in to the teen paranormal drama and was absolutely dying to read Awake at Dawn!!! This sequel picks up with at Camp SHadow Falls with Kylie Galen and the gang learning to cope with their paranormal existence and learn to coexist with other species peacefully. Kylie still has no idea which paranormal category she falls under but she does realize that her ability to see ghosts is not as easy as it would appear, being that ghosts are not the best communicators. She is also undergoing some physical changes that cause Holiday to think she may be a certain type of specie, which type I will not say because I do not believe in spoilers!!! Her love triangle is still fully active as she deals with Lucas, her werewolf love, gone from camp after he mysteriously left without a word with Fredericka, his ex a she-wolf who would do anything to get him back. And then there is Derek, fae, who absolutely adores Kylie and the two get hot and heavy until he senses that she is not quite over Lucas completely. She is forced to decide which one she wants to be with, discover what she truly is, find out who her dead father's real parents are so she can possibly discover the paranormal DNA she has, and convince her mom to allow her to attend the boarding school that the camp is now opening. And to make matters worse....Lucas comes back in the end, and he is very much ready to pick up where they left off!!! Plus Holiday has a little love tryst of her own with Burnett, a vampire who also works for the paranormal section of the government. Miranda, Kylie's witch roommate, falls into a little love triangle of her own, and Della begins to wonder if when she turned into full vamp, she may have actually went on a killing spree!!! Read this sequel!!! There are so many twists and turns and subplots, I read it all in 4 hours because I couldn't put it down!!!!! I am already dying for more!!!Awake at Dawn (Shadow Falls) Overview

I knew from the first page that this book was going to be different, and not just because Ms. Mafi's distinctive style made an immediate impression, but also because the story, and Juliette, had me from the first sentence. Juliette's been in solitary confinement for 264 days, and this girl is in rough shape. She's got the stream-of-consciousness, half-mad thing going on, and it's a raw, gritty, heartbreaking portrayal of what a lifetime of loneliness can do to a person. Juliette is jarred back into reality by the arrival of a cellmate, Adam. A boy. A boy who wants to talk to her, who wants to touch her. But she can never let him, and she can never let him know why. If he knew she killed a boy just by touching him, he would turn away from her like all the others, and she can't bear to lose the only human contact she's had in 264 days.

And if the rumors are true, Juliette may not be as alone as she thinks she is, and she may yet find a way to harness her power for a better purpose.
I just loved the way this was written. I think it takes a lot of guts to try something different, and a lot of talent to make it work. The words fall like poetry on the pages. I think it's brilliant, but it won't be everybody's cup of tea. And not only are the words mesmerizing, but the story is, too--emotional, unpredictable, suspenseful, and sexy! Juliette, Adam, and Warner are fascinating characters, and the love story is to die for. I can't quite call this perfect because I did find some of the emotional byplay to be a bit overdone. But it's still a great read, and I could not turn the pages fast enough as the story neared its conclusion. This is the first in a series, but it ends in just the right place with a satisfying combination of revelation and intrigue. It's poised perfectly for the next book in the series. I won't go into detail and give too much away, but I will say that I was a big Super Friends fan as a kid, and I get really excited when I think of the potential this series could have moving forward.
