A Certain Slant of Light ReviewI bought this book for my two older daughters to read due to the reviews and the subject matter being similar to other books they have enjoyed. However, I read the book before they did just to see what it was about, and I am so very glad I did! At the end I was just crying, but in such a good way.
I don't consider myself religious, more of an agnostic. Even though the book spoke about heaven, etc., it wasn't in such a way that made it overbearing. It actually questioned certain beliefs more than anything, so I did not think there were any sort of religious overtones in the book that tried to explain life, death, and what comes after in an arrogant, this-is-the-way-it-is-so-do-NOT-ask-questions-or-doubt-it-in-any-way tone.
What it was is an extremely touching, moving book with such a great conclusion. I most definitely did not think there should have been more, it was, as another reviewer called it, beautiful. It is an atypical love story which shows the power of forgiveness, all in a story that teens and adults can relate to.
Really, this is a wonderful book, you just have to read it. I know my children will love it, although since they are not adults, as the characters in the book are, they may not be able to relate to some aspects of the story, like how strong a mother's love is and why you would punish yourself for things you thought you had done wrong.
I hate to think there are people that think this book is only for older teenagers. If your kids are allowed out in the real world at all without earplugs and blinders, the sex, language, and drug references in this book are *not* going to surprise them. Sorry for having to say that, but it isn't cynicism, just unfortunately, reality.A Certain Slant of Light Overview

The Werewolf's Guide to Life: A Manual for the Newly Bitten ReviewThis book is really fun! A great book to gift to a friend. It's well written, clever and surprisingly chock full of fact.
It's also a good one to read on the bus, when you want the seat next to you to stay open and untaken. Especially if you read it at night, looking shifty and sweaty, with some claw marks put in the cover. The Werewolf's Guide to Life: A Manual for the Newly Bitten Overview

Shadows ReviewRegular readers of John Saul usually know what to expect when they pick up one of his novels; A small town setting, teenage protagonists with attitude issues and a malevolent technological experiment that is the work of some out of control corporation that threatens the peacefullness of the small town. Believe you me, Shadows does not stray very far from the formula.
Josh MacCallum is a ten year old with an attitude problem. He's constantly getting into fights at school, talks back at teachers and hates the fact he is living in a boring little desert town. His problem is that he is too smart. The curriculum at school is a joke to him and he is excluded and teased by his fellow students because of his superior intellect. His mother and principle decide to send him to a private school called The Barrington Academy for young students with gifted minds like his own. For the first time in his life, Josh feels like he belongs. But then a mysterious series of student suicides leads Josh to believe that the academy may not be all it is cracked up to be. Are all these suicides coincidental or is there something more sinister behind them?
Shadows is quite entertaining athough it doesn't offer Saul readers anything new. The book takes a while to get going but once we learn the forces at work behind the child suicides it becomes quite interesting. Fans of Orson Scott Card's Ender's Game and the Harry Potter novels ought to enjoy this one as much as I did.Shadows Overview

Angelfire ReviewElisabeth Monroe lives in a world where girls receive luxury cars for their birthdays, shop at high-end department stores, throw extravagant parties, and whose biggest concern is whether or not to straighten their hair before going out - basically the life of a normal privileged teenage girl. Yet Ellie is anything but. Only she doesn't know it. Not until her seventeenth birthday.
The nightmares she's been having are real. She is the Preliator, a being who has a mortal body but an immortal soul, the only one capable of wielding angelfire, who is reborn time and time again in order to serve her sole purpose - to destroy reapers and keep humanity safe.
But this time is different. Her rebirth took longer than ever before with only limited recollection of her past - a past that even her protector and guardian, Will, doesn't know completely. And this time the reapers aren't the only thing to fear. There is another out there who can threaten Ellie's very existence and alter her future in ways nothing before ever could.
As Ellie grapples with recovering her memories about who she is and not yet fully able to control her powers, will she be able to unlock the secrets in her mind in time to defeat Lucifer's growing armies and prevent the Apocalypse? Will the answers she finds be too much to handle? And will her humanity be enough to overcome the darkness within her?
***
Debut author, Courtney Allison Moulton is a new author to the young adult scene. Her writing has a maturity and a depth of story that is not always seen in a first time author. In Angelfire, she has created a novel with an intricate and detailed history that is woven into the plot through Will's recounting and Ellie's dreams. The author's inclusion of these nightmares and daydreams throughout the story is a captivating way to gain insight into Ellie's past and allows the reader to learn, along with Ellie, just who she is.
This story is one of the few in which the heroine does not have to slowly come into her own, relying solely on the protection of the male character to usher her through the process. While Ellie doesn't have all her memories or her full strength at the start, she is a fighter and has at her beck and call a power that will rival anyone, including her guardian and the reapers who wish to end her mortal (and immortal) existence.
While the story doesn't immediately hook you with a riveting preface, such as one of Ellie's nightmare-memories, it will. After the initial chapters that introduce the characters, the pace and action pick up quickly and plunge the reader into a story that will leave them on edge until the very end.
Ms. Moulton gives us a character in Ellie who, while immortal, has embraced her humanity, who is strong, but isn't always aware of that strength, and whose determination and feisty spirit have captured the heart of the guardian who has sworn to protect her above all else.
While the story reveals much about Ellie and Will, there are many questions left to be answered and many lifetimes still to be revealed.Angelfire Overview

Entice (Need) ReviewEntice is the latest book in bestselling author Carrie Jones' series about pixies, werewolves, mystical gods, soul mates and most importantly...need.
Starting shortly after Captivate left off, Entice continues the story of young Zara. After the events in Captivate, Zara has become the very thing she believes to be evil: a pixie. And not just a regular pixie, but a pixie queen. Zara's soul mate, Nick, is dead, but instead of disappearing forever, he has been taken to a place where warriors' souls go after they die called Valhalla. Yes, the mythical Valhalla, complete with Odin and other Norse gods. With help from her pixie king Astley (you know, every time I read that name wondered if he would ever give her up, ever let her down, ever run around and hurt her), Zara journeys to Valhalla to bring back her beloved Nick while trying to cope with her new-found pixiness. The journey, of course, is an action-packed ride infused with magic and romance.
The world of Need expands in Entice, and it's even more fascinating than before. The universe of evil pixies and god-like characters is really well-drawn and incredibly engrossing to read about. While at times I found the characters to be a tad on the annoying side, the lush beauty of the world always managed to save me from getting too upset at the book. Though the characters do have these negative moments, there are plenty of positives that help balance it out.
Zara's struggles in Entice do seem a little over-the-top or cliche at times, but the novel offers a compelling, easy and overall enjoyable read. While I admit I've read better teen paranormal romance out there, Entice continues the Need series in a satisfying way that will keep fans coming back for more. Fans of Twilight and other teen paranormal romances should also enjoy it.Entice (Need) Overview

Thirst No. 3: The Eternal Dawn ReviewOne of the big questions about this book is: "How can it be about the same characters?"
Anyone who has read the description knows it is...and having just finished the book, I can say that I am very pleased--and it actually works. And it helps that the author does not try to explain it more than is necessary.
The reviews of `The Eternal Dawn' are bound to be mixed. Anyone who has only read the `Thirst' books will most likely be disappointed. And anyone who has read all of Pike's novels will fall in love with Alisa (Sita) all over again. But it could go either way.
When I read that `The Last Vampire' series was being re-released as `Thirst,' I reread the series. My big concern was getting through the sixth book again. It had always felt forced to me...like Pike was told he had to conclude the series and move on--or that someone else had written it, except for the epilogue. But it made a little bit more sense when I read the series all at once (but still did not feel right).
When I first read that he was continuing the series, I did not want to believe it. There has always been a rumor that he planned more books; but after fifteen years, I was beginning to think it was a hoax. There was also the rumor that he never wanted to write `young adult' novels ever again....
A lot of people will claim that Pike wrote `Thirst' because vampires are big now. But the truth is that the series was originally released in the mid-1990s and were a huge success with Pike's fans--even the final book (at the time) kept fans waiting for more. Then, in 1997, the author disappeared for seven years. He had left us with mediocre stories like `The Execution of Innocence' and `Magic Fire' and the horrible (my opinion) `The Grave' (which should have ended after the first chapter).
He returned in 2004 with the long awaited `The Blind Mirror' - which was good enough to satisfy a need for new Pike. Then he went into the `Alosha' series. I got halfway through the second book and stopped. When the time comes, I will try again. I have `Falling' but have not read it yet. [I feel that Pike is trying a little too hard when it comes to his adult works. `Sati' and `The Listeners' are recommended. I have not read `The Cold One' - and `The Season of Passage' will require me to reread it because I am one of few fans that said "It's just okay" (good concept, weak payoff) while most people loved it.]
His return to `The Last Vampire' (I hate the new title `Thirst') is amazing. After fifteen years, he still gets Sita's voice perfectly. There are some flaws with `The Eternal Dawn', but I have chosen to overlook them for two reasons. 1) I want to know where Pike is going with this series. 2) I am giving Pike extra credit for making it very difficult to write a review for `Thirst 3' because I want to explain the plot twists so bad!
Appropriate reading age: 15+ (please note that the 15 is because this is a book - as a movie, it would be rated R) for violence, sexual references, drug references, mild language, and themes.

Beautiful Chaos (Beautiful Creatures, Book 3) ReviewBeautiful Chaos is the third book in Kami Garcia's and Margaret Stohl's series, entitled Beautiful Creatures. The third installment brings so much more to the plate than the first two did. The action is higher in this book than in the first installments, and of course it ends on a ridiculous cliffhanger, just like the second book did. The book is more depressing than the others, because in this book, Ethan is the one having most of the problems, not Lena, and after all he is the narrator.
Beautiful Chaos makes me so excited for the last book in the series, but it also makes me sad that I have to wait an entire year for it! I can't wait to see what Garcia and Stohl bring to the plate when they wrap up the series!Beautiful Chaos (Beautiful Creatures, Book 3) Overview
