The War of the Dwarves ReviewTungdil Bolofar the dwarf has become a legend amidst the various species like the Dwarves, Elves and humans after he led their side to victory over the Nod'onn. Everyone knows defeat would mean genocide with the total destruction of Girdlegard.
The hero hopes to rest somewhat on his laurels but remain vigilant. Tungdil is aware of how precarious the triumph is as the Alfs and the Bognilim Black Water immortal Orcs still plot to drive the Dwarves and humans out of their position of power. He also hears whispers that the demi-god Avatars are preparing to invade from the Outerlands to ethnically cleanse what they believe is evil. However, it is what he does not know yet is that the biggest threat of all are the blood thirsty lethal Thirdlings Dwarves ho are planning a violent coup d'etat.
The follow up to The Dwarves is a super fantasy that expands the Heitz mythology for instance with the addition of the Freeling Dwarves and the new malevolence. The story line moves at a terrific pace on sea, land and underground as the hero of the previous war is back dealing with another nasty menace and treachery from within. The War of the Dwarves is a strong saga as the key cast including the bad dudes seem genuine while the political and social structure of the species enhance the incredibly action packed fantasy.

The River of Shadows (Chathrand Voyage) ReviewRedick just continues to hone his craft, and The River of Shadows is a beautiful piece of literature. The Chathrand Voyage series is my second favorite series of all-time (Rothfuss' Kingkiller series is my #1 all-time favorite). Redick has an incredible ability to suck you into this world that is engrossing, intriguing, and consuming. His characters are well-developed and complex; relatable, likable, yet flawed (but not so much that you dislike them, which is often the case these days). And this applies to all of the characters in these books...there just aren't many un-developed or under-developed characters. Each has its own unique identity, character, strengths, flaws, etc. The world is brilliantly realized and sucks you in completely.
Those things are all true of each of the books of this series. Each one can stand on its own, but are definitely part of a larger whole. The overall story being told here is interesting and it has a lot of great twists and turns...very few of them predictable, and all of them add to the story and keep your interest. Redick is great at plotting. The pace moves quickly, but he knows how to balance the fast-paced "action" scenes with the scenes of reflection...a good balance between the "fantastic" and the "mundane" (a better word might be "realistic"). Holywood movies could learn a lot from Redick about how to craft a story.
This book is fantastic. Should you read the first two books in the series before reading this? It's not necessary, I don't think...there's enough of a summation of the earlier books included herein (though not so much that I was annoyed, as I often am when the beginning of a sequel spends 1/4 of itself rehashing what has already happened in the previous volumes). But, it's hard for me to gauge that, since I HAVE read the first two books. Here's what I can say for sure...it would be well worth it to read the first two books anyway. All three are absolutely fantastic. Redick has an incredible talent, and these books are truly among the best out there. Highly, highly recommended!The River of Shadows (Chathrand Voyage) Overview

On a Pale Horse (Incarnations of Immortality, Bk. 1) ReviewThis is the first Piers Anthony book I ever read, and I read it for all the wrong reasons. I read it because the title intrigued me. I read it because it had a really cool cover. I was young and still judged many books on that basis. Fortunately, I hit the jackpot with this one.
I give this book five stars because it earned each and every one of them. I can be stingy with my stars at times, but I wonder if five is enough for this one. On A Pale Horse is book 1 of the Incarnations of Immortality, but don't be intimidated by the prospect of buying all the others because this one's a heavyweight all by its lonesome (it's the only one I've personally read so far). The main character is Zane, who is forced to take over the position of Death when he accidentally shoots and kills the previous Death (who had the misfortune of barging in a bit prematurely during Zane's suicide attempt). This sounds a little wacky, and it is, but wonderfully so.
From there, the book continues to tell the story of Zane as he learns the ropes of Reaping. The main plot involves Satan trying to lure Death into a scheme that involves him killing this girl he's come to love. The whole idea of Satan vs. Death is very cool, and is worth the price of the book alone. However, said plot, while awesome, was not my favorite part of the book because there's just so much dang cool stuf in here! For one thing, the book is hilarious, while several humorous moments in which Zane finds that Reaping isn't as easy as it looks. There's also a wonderful world Anthony has created that blends science and magic. And one thing that Anthony pulls off that few can is to, among a book filled with both laughs and adventure, weave in some deeply profound philosophical perspectives (on Death, of course).
This book just had it all, and it had some very unique ideas about Death and salvation. One thing I must say, though(and I hate having to say it, but I have to because there are some really stupid people out there) is that this is a work of fiction. I am a Christian and realize that some of the ideas presented in this book are at odds with my own personal beliefs, but that doesn't mean I can't enjoy and appreciate the originality and creativity of them. In other words, for all you "muggles" out there, Piers isn't trying to convert anybody to his way of thinking. He just wants to give us a good book and he does. As for those of you who may disagree with me, I say this: if you are really afraid that reading things like this will actually cause you to change your deepest beliefs, it's high time you took a look inside yourself and determine just how deep your belief is in the first place. The Rise of the Ice Wolf (The Ice Wolf Trilogy) Review"Rise of the Ice Wolf" is not a terribly original book but it is a very entertaining story that I enjoyed reading very much. Lately, there have not been too many fantasy stories that I have enjoyed just because it was a fun read. Not so here! This book has reminded me of just how much fun a simple story can be when there are characters present that you can care about and become interested in what happens to them.
I have enjoyed the story so much that I found myself wanting to read just one more chapter and, after that, just one more. And that hasn't happened with a fantasy book for me for a long time. You can bet that I will read the next book and I am hoping that the authors will continue with the series.

The Black God's War: A Novella Introducing a new Epic Fantasy Review"The Black God's War" is the opening to Moses Siregar III's upcoming novel, and though it only comprises the first 15 chapters, it is an engaging introduction to the world and its story.
The story is most certainly an entry in the grand old tradition of Epic fantasy. Two nations, with distinct cultures and histories, locked in a years-long war to determine the fate of their people and their faith...big stakes, and a big story.
This novella focuses on the Rezzia, the people of a large empire with an (apparent) theocracy--the gods of Rezzia, known collectively as Lux Lucis, are present and active in the lives of their worshipers, and their powers are channeled by the spiritual and martial leader known as the "Haissem".
(Here's a little linguistic tip: When you read this book, try reading backwards.)
As the book opens, the latest Haissem is born, and his older sister witnesses his mother's death--and the titulary Black God taking a hand in it. From here, we move forward to the ascension of the baby Haissem, Caio, to his role as a leader and wielder of holy power, the Dux Spiritus. And then, war comes, and drags on for years.
This novella is small in scope, giving readers a sense of the lead characters and their roles in the story--not a complete novel, no, but still a page turner (screen scroller?) and well worth the purchase. It engages both action and character to make a readable, enjoyable, and worthy story.
Siregar is a fresh writer, and there are times when that comes out in the story; the language use can, at times, betray a certain amount of inexperience, but the story gets by on its characters and world and I don't hesitate to recommend it.
