Darkness Becomes Her ReviewSYNOPSIS:
Ari was born with teal eyes and silver hair which can not be changed nor destroyed. She has always felt like a freak. Ari has grown up in numerous foster homes since her mother left her as a child. Now that she's older, she wants some answers as to who she is and where she has come from.
Ari is not guaranteed many answers when she finds her mother has been dead for many years. She does, however, uncover one short and not extremely detailed message: RUN. Where can she run and who exactly is she running from? Ari knows someone, or something, is after her.
She decides to return to the place of her birth, New 2, the rebuilt city of New Orleans which was destroyed by multiple category 4 hurricanes when she was a child. Ari has never been sure of what New 2 really holds but once she returns, she finds it is very different. Where growing up Ari was pretty much a freak, in New 2 she is practically normal.
Creatures here seem to be afraid of Ari and what she can do, whatever that is. She is determined to find out the truth about herself, but sometimes the truth is more terrifying and haunting than Ari could ever suspect.
The premise was quite different than what I've come across in most YA paranormal novels recently. It had an entire slew of different creatures. Your more common vampire and werewolf showed up, as well as more unique characters like harpies, gods and arachnid people.
The setting of New 2 - an improvised version of New Orleans - was quite interesting. With the amount of hurricanes that hit around that area, I could actually imagine the type of damage that could happen and the way the city was rebuilt by the society in this novel. New 2 is now a secluded and dangerous sector separated from the rest of the U.S. after it's purchase and refurbishment by the Novem. Technology of the Gods: The Incredible Sciences of the Ancients ReviewI bought this book with great anticipation...was on the waiting list for months! When it finally became available I couldn't wait to read it. I flipped through it in even more anticipation at the fantastic pictures and illustrations once I got it.
I have to say I was thrilled and dissappointed all at once. The content of the book was absolutely fascinating. The author stirred up subjects that totally engulfed me; but as I'd read into each, I found him wandering off into some other rather uninteresting part of the subject and leaving me dieing to get back to the origional thought...which he often didn't. I got the feeling that he hurried the book and that it never really got edited... Thoughts ran off the page and never got finished; as if pages were missing from the printing.
I'd like to see this entire book re-thought and rewritten, because the CONTENT of the book is astounding to say the least. I'd recommend it to anyone who's digging into ancient history/origins because it has so much interesting material. But I would certainly warn them that it's not a well written or easy to follow book. I actually found myself getting bored with the author's wandering thoughts, especially when he teased with a fascinating subject, then wandered off to la la land.Technology of the Gods: The Incredible Sciences of the Ancients Overview

The Black God's War: A Novella Introducing a new Epic Fantasy Review"The Black God's War" is the opening to Moses Siregar III's upcoming novel, and though it only comprises the first 15 chapters, it is an engaging introduction to the world and its story.
The story is most certainly an entry in the grand old tradition of Epic fantasy. Two nations, with distinct cultures and histories, locked in a years-long war to determine the fate of their people and their faith...big stakes, and a big story.
This novella focuses on the Rezzia, the people of a large empire with an (apparent) theocracy--the gods of Rezzia, known collectively as Lux Lucis, are present and active in the lives of their worshipers, and their powers are channeled by the spiritual and martial leader known as the "Haissem".
(Here's a little linguistic tip: When you read this book, try reading backwards.)
As the book opens, the latest Haissem is born, and his older sister witnesses his mother's death--and the titulary Black God taking a hand in it. From here, we move forward to the ascension of the baby Haissem, Caio, to his role as a leader and wielder of holy power, the Dux Spiritus. And then, war comes, and drags on for years.
This novella is small in scope, giving readers a sense of the lead characters and their roles in the story--not a complete novel, no, but still a page turner (screen scroller?) and well worth the purchase. It engages both action and character to make a readable, enjoyable, and worthy story.
Siregar is a fresh writer, and there are times when that comes out in the story; the language use can, at times, betray a certain amount of inexperience, but the story gets by on its characters and world and I don't hesitate to recommend it.
