No Passengers Beyond This Point ReviewI don't think there is any author out there that writes kids characters as well as Gennifer Choldenko. With the Tompkins kids, she has created a family of siblings that are portrayed so realistically that when all the crazy things start happening to them, the reader is just sucked right along for what turns out to be a very crazy ride.
India is 14 and totally self obsessed, much like any young teenage girl. Look a little deeper and you will see her insecurity and overwhelming desire to be loved and appreciated. Finn is 12 and the worrier of the family. He wants to make everything right for everybody. Perhaps my favorite character is Mouse, the six year old genius. She's only in kindergarten but does fifth grade math and asks questions about everything. Her brain travels a hundred miles per hour and the author does a fantastic job with her dialogue. Named Mouse because she squeaks so much, she is a character of marvelous depth and charm.
All of these characters are dealing with some harsh realities. Their mom has just told them that the bank is foreclosing on their house and they have to move to Colorado to stay with an uncle that none of them have ever met. For India it means leaving her friends, for Finn it means leaving his basketball dreams, and for Mouse, it means leaving their mother who has to stay behind and finish out the school year.
This has all the makings of a realistic story about an increasingly common circumstance, but when the plane the kids are traveling on makes an early landing, the story shifts dramatically into the fantasy realm. It's quite a shock, but the author handles it seamlessly and before you know it you are traveling down the highway in a pink taxi with feathers. I can't really speak to much more of the plot without giving too much away, except to say that the kids go on an adventure that will test their mettle and help them come to some realizations about their own strengths and how much they love each other. The story turns into something that is highly original, very clever, and completely well imagined.
As an adult reader, I really loved this story. It will be a challenging read for any kid age 10 and up. Some elements can initially be confusing, but any reader who enjoys solving puzzles, or just figuring things out will get a big kick out of this one. The author doesn't just lay the story out for you, you have to do a bit of thinking and pay close attention to detail. Those that do will be rewarded with not only a grand story of adventure, but also a tale of some unexpected depth. There is quite a bit of humor, and also some deep felt emotions. This is an enthusiastic recommend, especially for middle schoolers on up.No Passengers Beyond This Point Overview

Darkness Becomes Her ReviewSYNOPSIS:
Ari was born with teal eyes and silver hair which can not be changed nor destroyed. She has always felt like a freak. Ari has grown up in numerous foster homes since her mother left her as a child. Now that she's older, she wants some answers as to who she is and where she has come from.
Ari is not guaranteed many answers when she finds her mother has been dead for many years. She does, however, uncover one short and not extremely detailed message: RUN. Where can she run and who exactly is she running from? Ari knows someone, or something, is after her.
She decides to return to the place of her birth, New 2, the rebuilt city of New Orleans which was destroyed by multiple category 4 hurricanes when she was a child. Ari has never been sure of what New 2 really holds but once she returns, she finds it is very different. Where growing up Ari was pretty much a freak, in New 2 she is practically normal.
Creatures here seem to be afraid of Ari and what she can do, whatever that is. She is determined to find out the truth about herself, but sometimes the truth is more terrifying and haunting than Ari could ever suspect.
The premise was quite different than what I've come across in most YA paranormal novels recently. It had an entire slew of different creatures. Your more common vampire and werewolf showed up, as well as more unique characters like harpies, gods and arachnid people.
The setting of New 2 - an improvised version of New Orleans - was quite interesting. With the amount of hurricanes that hit around that area, I could actually imagine the type of damage that could happen and the way the city was rebuilt by the society in this novel. New 2 is now a secluded and dangerous sector separated from the rest of the U.S. after it's purchase and refurbishment by the Novem. The area is now riddled with rumors of the supernatural.Darkness Becomes Her Overview

While I always agreed with this good advice, whenever I explored my soul, I seemed to fail to come up with meaningful, non-judgemental answers - possibly because my questions themselves were not thought provoking.
Enter Ms Peason and her "Heros Within" book. Her brilliant, accessible review of the 12 archetypes that define our personalities suddenly provided me with a new handle - a key to a better understanding of myself and others. What I particularly appreciated in her book was its combination of a rigurous, scientific treatment of the subject, couched in a language both accessible and devoid of academic circumlucutions. Storm Runners Book 2: The Surge ReviewChase and his friends Nicole and Rashawn have reached shelter from the hurricane. But they aren't safe yet.

My Thoughts: Just like the first book in this trilogy - this book is addictive, fast-paced action and danger kept me turning the pages. A wonderful book about battling Mother Nature, quick thinking, and working together against all odds. Eona ReviewWell, the book really does grab you. I couldn't put it down.
I was disappointed with the lack of development in Eona's character. Eona makes bad decisions and even when something goes down that isn't her fault, everyone blames her anyway - its not like she knew what would happen when she healed Ryko, but everyone blamed her for what was done to both him and the village they were in at the time. I expected her to be stronger, wiser, in this second book, but its like she learned nothing from the events from the first. Then though there was some sword play, and it was cool seeing her kick a little ass, there wasn't really any to speak of. Most of the fighting and sacrifices was all done by other people. She just kind of stood to the side and spoke on cue. It was just sad. She was like that in the first book but it was understandable given the situation, being thrust into this very new place and not understanding what was going on, but in this book I just expected a much stronger heroine, one that would communicate with others instead of keeping secrets as that did not work out so well for her in the first book, a heroine that I could stand behind, be proud of. But instead she was exactly the same and frankly, it was a bit embarrassing. By the end of it I just thought she was stupid.
And then the author decided that it would make perfect sense for Eona to develop romantic feelings for and even make out with Ido, the man who tried to RAPE her. Not that having feelings for the prince, Kygo, considering how many times he betrayed her trust, insulted her, and used her, made any more sense.
I won't be reading this book again, ever. These books are okay for maybe a little weekend escapism but I wouldn't recommend them for young, impressionable girls.

The Minotaur Takes a Cigarette Break: A Novel ReviewIf you read any synopsis of this book, you'd probably think, "Wow, how odd." Well, you'd be correct. However, putting the book down and not reading it because of that would be a grave mistake.
As debut novels go, this is certainly one of the better. It is not large, perhaps 350 pages, has a focused scope, great characters, and great writing.
Steven Sherrill's poetry background is evident in the book, but you certainly don't have to be a poetry lover (I'm not) to enjoy it. His writing is gorgeous, interspacing long lyrical lines with brief five word sentences. His descriptive talents are amazing. As one who worked in a restaurant in high school, I can say that the sights, sounds, and events that take place at the Minotaur's work are exactly correct.
Sherrill uses humor and humanity to great effect and by the first few pages of the novel, I did not find it strange at all that a creature with the head of a bull and body of a man was coexisting with humans in the modern South. I found myself identifing with some of what the Minotaur goes through, and found myself rooting for him.
If you've ever thought about taking a chance on a new author, this book is an excellent choice. It will make you smile and at the same time make you wonder about what it is to be fully human.The Minotaur Takes a Cigarette Break: A Novel Overview

Women Who Run with the Wolves ReviewReading the other customer reviews, I find it very interesting to see how different they are, and how different many of them are from my experience.
I was surprised to read the review on this page by the woman who believes we ought to read Jung first (or instead). My experience is the opposite; when I've picked up Jung's original works I've found them tough to follow, but this book I found very accessible and useful. I don't think the comparison between the Bible and a tv evangelist is at all fair. It's more like the difference between Strunk & White and the Oxford English Dictionary. The OED is wonderful, but Strunk & White is the one that is most likely to help you become a better writer.
Although I think of myself as a creative person, I tend to downplay that part of myself and to lead with my left brain, as it were. Reading this book I felt like I was being given a path to my inner wellspring. I felt that I had at last found water for a thirst I hadn't quite been able to identify until now.
This book is about one's inner life. It is not a how-to book, it's not political (except in the sense that the personal is political), and I didn't feel that it over-emphasized "what's wrong with you," as another reader put it. It does continually nudge one to think about what might be wrong: many many women are cut off from their own preferences, their own inner selves, because they feel pressured to conform with societal norms. Many societal norms are, in my opinion, quite damaging and inappropriate. It is very easy in American society to get the impression that women should be seen and not heard. Women are still encouraged to focus on how we look, to be compliant, to act ladylike and be nice even when we are being denigrated, and to stand by our man no matter what. We are encouraged to help others at the expense of our own happiness, and many many of us fall into this trap without even realizing it. We think it is normal to put ourselves last, and we lose touch with the shames and the fears that keep us from being happy, wiping the subject of happiness off the table with a dismissive hand as something that is too indulgent or not important.
This book helped me realize the ways in which I stand in my own way, and it gave me courage and inspiration.
The author is not only a Jungian analyst, but a storyteller. She is steeped in the traditions of storytelling from both the Latin and the Hungarian sides of her family, and I very much enjoyed the ways in which she uses this legacy of the storyteller as healer to make her points. I never thought of storytelling in this way before, but reading this book I found it to be true. (I feel that her stories have helped heal me.) I am a storyteller myself, of a sort, so for me the book was a kind of homecoming. If you have ever wondered why fairy tales seem so cruel and peculiar, you will find the answers in this book. Fairy tales have been mangled in the translation, but this author shows you where they came from and what they are really about.
While I am a huge believer in free-market capitalism, growth, business, and civilization (as opposed to back-to-nature Green-ery), I have tremendous concerns about the increasingly violent and impersonal nature of our society. This book shows you how to cultivate a healing, loving attitude toward the world without becoming a doormat--quite the contrary, it shows how love can give you more strength and power than you'll ever find in a boardroom.
Another review on this page criticized the book for not putting these issues into a broader context of one's life. It took twenty years for this author to distill her wisdom of storytelling and her knowledge of Jungian archetypes into this lovely, readable book. For me, that's quite an accomplishment. I'm more than willing to take it the rest of the way myself.Women Who Run with the Wolves Overview

13 Gifts Review
Wendy Mass seems to know that birthdays are really important to kids, especially their 13th birthday. This is her second book revolving around a deadline of turning 13, and it adds a layer of excitement and suspense.
There is also a mystical aspect to the book. There is a mysterious old woman who loves to give school students tasks to complete...and if they don't she usually threatens dire circumstances. The fantastical element makes the book more fun to read and opens limitless possibilities.
The plot is also a lot of fun. Tara (and her friends) have to find 13 different items, all of which seem random and unconnected. It turns out they lead to more excitement and adventure for the entire town!
While the fantasy and the birthday is fun, what really makes this book are the characters and the relationships. Tara has moved around her entire life, so she is always on the outside of groups and doesn't really know how to make friends and depend on others. Luckily, she is given a chance to make some real friends and learns what it is like. She is smart, kind, and it is so much fun to watch her grow.
All of her new friends are realistic and I think kids will be able to see themselves in someone. There is the sweet and nervous David, getting ready for his Bar Mitzvah, without his father by his side. He was my favorite character because he is so mature for his age and is the key for Tara and her journey.
It was another great book by Wendy Mass. She proves, once again, that she understand the middle grade audience. I am really glad I can give this to my husband's middle school classroom!
