A Need So Beautiful ReviewCharlotte Cassidy has the Need: a call to help others, one that grows unbearably painful if she tries to ignore it. She has no control over it and the pull comes at any given time: at school, when she's making out with her boyfriend, when her best friend needs her the most... As if that weren't enough, she soon learns that the more she helps those that need her, the more her loved ones forget her.
I really appreciated the journey of emotions that Charlotte went through in the course of the book. Suzanne Young perfectly displayed the inner conflict that Charlotte endured: the pull in this and that direction, the different degrees of obligation that Charlotte felt -- both to strangers and her own loved ones -- and, of course, the requisite desire to just be normal. Unlike many of the abilities featured in other YA supernatural novels, Charlotte doesn't get any cool perks. Sure, she knows that she helped someone, but she loses part of herself in the process. It was a very personal struggle and one that was very heartbreaking.
Most of the minor characters fell flat to me. Harlin came across as the perfect boyfriend and all that good stuff, but I felt that there wasn't much substance to him. Charlotte's best friend, Sarah, was a bit more interesting with her family dynamic but, even with her, there was a distinct feeling that we barely skimmed over the surface of her character. Similarly, though Charlotte's relationships with her family were the most interesting and touching, there wasn't enough. Yes, this is only the first book of the series, and I'm sure we'll see more these characters in the second, but there was a certain missing piece to have them "come alive" for me. As for Monroe, their interactions were the ones I enjoyed the most as I actually saw progress -- and setbacks -- in their friendship.
The conclusion of the book completely turned everything upside down -- in a very good way. An already interesting premise has the potential to get even better in the sequel, A Want So Wicked. I'm definitely looking forward to seeing where the story continues!A Need So Beautiful Overview

The Memory Palace ReviewI don't particularly care for harrowing survivor memoirs from children of abusive or mentally ill family members. They almost always come off as sensational, blaming, or whining diatribes, and do we really need another one of those? The good news is The Memory Palace doesn't even come close to falling into that trap. Mira Bartok's story of her relationship with her schizophrenic mother who eventually becomes homeless is at once compelling, compassionate, and possesses some of the most beautiful and lyrical prose I've ever read in memoir. And did I mention it's also a page-turner? However, what really sets this book apart is how Bartok integrates her beautiful artwork into the structure of the book to help recall her past and to bring her authentic story to the page. The Memory Palace is essentially an illustrated memoir that details the incredible bond between mother and daughter, the issue of homelessness, and how we, as a nation, perceive mental illness and disability in our culture. It is a visceral and profound story, and is so much more than a blur of one sensational event after another. This is an artful memoir of an examined life, one that exudes strength, determination, and above all, love. Highly recommended.

Moonwalking with Einstein: The Art and Science of Remembering Everything ReviewWhether you have memory problems (can't recall the name of someone you met a week ago?) or not, you're likely to improve your memory after reading this book. Even if you don't - but odds are you will - it makes for fascinating reading.
It definitely was a major aid for me and I do think of it as a unique "self help" book, one that can have immediate results, helping to make life easier, alleviate tricky memory issues and more. I think it is important to disclose that I'm a Baby Boomer and my memory seems to have worsened with age. I used to recall the name of nearly everyone I met as well as both major and minor actors and actresses, all of my teachers (from kindergarten through high school) as well as the first and last names of every one of my high school classmates. I could recall even tiny details of books read long ago.
But Moonwalking with Einstein goes far beyond remembering the names of acqaintances. It can help make your daily life easier, aiding you when you try to find lost items - or keep them from getting lost in the first place- and actually train you to find ways to improve your memory.
For added fun, the author includes examples of people who have amazing abilities to recall things. I wondered if at least one of them could give Vegas a run for its money or even be banned from casinos. Although I don't plan to test my abilities in Vegas, I have been practicing in casual card games, with gratifying results. The surprised looks from friends and family members was worth the cost of the book.
I'd strongly recommend you give this one a try. The techniques can even be fun for a whole family to share - and test -together.
