Ghetto at the Center of the World: Chungking Mansions, Hong Kong ReviewChungking Mansions is an infamous building in Hong Kong. It is a labyrinth of exotica, adventure , and otherness. In many ways it is a shadowy unknown place to many who live in Hong Kong and the countless travelers it attracts yearly. What is for sure is that we want to know more about it. Specifically more about the eclectic array of people that walk and work in its corridors each day. This fine work by Gordon Mathews satiates this curiosity quite fully.
Exploring the history of the building, its many personalities, the goods and businesses that pass through, and the new transformations, Gordon Mathews produces a landmark text. This work is particularly compelling because it addresses some misconceptions about Chungking Mansions, namely its safety and criminality and redresses these issues. It shows us that the building is intricately placed in what Mathews terms `low end globalization'. Millions of phones sold in this building sold by Pakistani tradesmen can be traced to the streets of Lagos. Illegal workers support their families in Calcutta by washing dishes or handing out flyers for the many restaurants in the building. Sex workers save money to start businesses back in their home countries. The most contemporary feature of the building is the rise in African traders passing through, this phenomenon is explored in detail and provides context for the transformations visible in the streets around Chungking Mansions.
Another important contribution this text offers is that of acknowledging asylum seekers in Hong Kong and showing their particular struggles in the territory. Many of these asylum seekers who have fled torture or the threat of political assassination frequent Chungking Mansions and contribute to an understanding of the place as a bourgeois location. The truth being that whilst the building is populated with people from disparate parts of the world, they are often the middle class entrepreneurs of their countries, and many of the businesses in Chungking Mansions themselves can be comfortably profitable.
Mathews is astute in pointing out that the fortunes and future of Chungking Mansions are tied to global caprices. Changes in visa regulations, the Olympics, and even 9/11 have changed the people and business practices that occupy Chungking Mansions. These factors reconfirm another important point that the author makes, whilst Chungking Mansions is in Hong Kong, it is not `of' Hong Kong. As such this book will tell you much about the building, much about trade with China, and much about low end globalization, it will tell you less however about Hong Kong. After all Chungking Mansions is an island of otherness in this city, a ghetto at the center of the world.

Bad for the Jews ReviewSherman is a writer for the Colbert Report and he has compiled a list of people to make Jews feel schpilkas. Of course, you have the imprisoned Bernie Madoff, and former nude model and Jew by Choice, Laura Schlessinger. Former NY State governor and whore monger Eliot Spitzer is there, too. Judge Judy and Barbra Streisand are mentioned in the book. What is so bad about them? Well, some people get embarrassed. Those people need more chutzpah in their lives. I mean, the people in the book are not all bad, there are various degrees, but if the author can spin a funny story, they are included. Sure, Leonard Nimoy likes photographing female nudes who remind him of the feminine side of G!d, but is that so bad? Many others appear in the book: Sergey Brin and Larry Page; Patti Stanger; David Blane; Gene Simmons of Kiss; Rabbi Shmuley Boteach; Jim Cramer of CNBC; Mark Zuckerberg of Facebook; Philip Roth of Portnoy's Complaint; Jack Abramoff of casino fame; Alan Greenspan (I didn't know he was Jewish, I thought he was Ayn Randish); Lloyd Blankfein of the GoldmanSachs Elevator; Solomon Dwek and all those people who were arrested in NY and NJ; accused murderer Phil Spector and his crazy hairstyle; Attorney Orly Taitz, DDS (Oh, I did not know this Birther was Jewish); Jerry Springer; Monica Lewinsky; Ron Jeremy; Bar Refaeli the model; Howard Stern; and more. The author is no Father James Martin, SJ, but he is funny enough and not as bad for the Jews as some of those in his book.Bad for the Jews Overview

Sad Monsters: Growling on the Outside, Crying on the Inside ReviewThis book consists of forty brief vignettes about various monsters, some of whom are, as the title implies, sad. Not every monster cries himself to sleep at night, though; some quite enjoy their lives of monstrosity. Most of them have romantic problems. It's not easy to be a monster on the prowl in the dating sense, what with also prowling in the nomming sense
It may interest you to know that the author, Frank Lesser, writes for The Colbert Report. This sets some pretty high standards for the book to follow. Thankfully, Sad Monsters was just what I hoped it would be. Puns and irony abound, along with some cute postmodernism (ain't that reevaluation of that monster and his secret pain just precious?).
You get a really wide range of monsters in here. Lesser definitely isn't sticking only to the most popular (zombies, werewolves, vampires). Some of my favorite vignettes were Godzilla wondering what the point of all the stomping is (also, did you know that Godzilla likes M*A*S*H as much as I do?), formerly people-munching diets going vegan or carb-free, peaceful zombies being chased by humans, unsuccessful monsters like Count Macula (who just might work at my office) and Igor's résumé. Pretty much each of the little stories will make you bust out laughing, snort, groan or teehee.
Reading Sad Monsters takes somewhere around an hour. This is an estimate, since I read multiple books at one time; suffice it to say that it is quite short. I feel like this is an excellent book to pull out to amuse your friends with or to buy quirky friends for Christmas (don't know what to get them but know they love Colbert style humor?). Plus, how cute is that monster on the cover!?!Sad Monsters: Growling on the Outside, Crying on the Inside Overview

Covenant: A Novel ReviewSee book summary above.
I love scientific thrillers, especially when put to a good story and a fast plot line.
I see this becoming a favorite series for me.
Though the protagonist, Ethan Warner, doesn't seem to be the smartest or the best
planner when attacking something, he always seems to get lucky. It takes a little
stretch of the imagination but it's still a satisfying read.
Well done!Covenant: A Novel Overview

Fiction Ruined My Family ReviewI downloaded this book from Audible, read by the author. Not always a great thing when an author reads her own memoir, but a HUGE advantage when you're Jeanne Darst (of whom I'd never heard before Janet Maslin's NYTimes review). So I'm walking around with my iPod listening and cackling and sometimes helplessly gasping with laughter (husband watching wide-eyed--I am usually a pretty tough crowd). LOL has become a cliche but seriously I was LOLing all over the place (in my car, on my bike, throughout the home) This book is HILARIOUS, touching, poignant, inspiring etc but mostly HILARIOUS. I love memoirs and especially those by smart independent women who've had a spot of bother here and there in their lives . . . I've listened to or read them all, devouring them as they appear. But this is the best. By far. I don't envy Jeanne her home life, the years of having to parent her parents (and her therapist at one point). But I hugely admire her honesty, her wit, her unsparing clear focus on her own actions. And damn she is funny. The section on ahem crabs . . . words fail. Well they fail me, they do not fail this writer. Not a false note. Totally recommend.

Swing Your Sword: Leading the Charge in Football and Life ReviewAs a Tech fan and former student, I was interested in finally hearing Leach's side of the story. This book turned out to be so much more. I'm so glad that this is more of an autobiography, and that we learned more from Mike Leach's own pen about his life and his history. I agree completely with Donald Trump... Mike Leach was screwed... and the good 'ol boy network in Lubbock will continue to assassinate his character, lie about his actions, etc. in order to legitimize their screwing of Mike Leach. But in the end, Leach has won. He kept his honor, his principles, and his sense of humor about the whole thing. The scumbags in the bell tower have to live with themselves, and that can't be easy. Great book Mike, and I'm glad I actually purchased it and read it.Swing Your Sword: Leading the Charge in Football and Life Overview

How to Win Friends and Influence People in the Digital Age ReviewDo you like awful jargon? Bad writing? Meaningless "improvements"? Do you really want to buy a book with gobbledygook sentences like "Today's biggest enemy of lasting influence is the sector of both personal and corporate musing that concerns itself with the art of creating impressions without consulting the science of need ascertainment"?
Frankly, this unfortunate "revision and updating" of the Carnegie book is a big step backward---a step you can avoid making by buying the original book, which is actually very readable. Whereas this "new" version is so full of mind-numbing jargon you'll want to pull your hair out.
Conclusion: Either this book is a tranparent ploy to make money, regardless of the quality of the work, or the book's owners employed the wrong people to "revise and update" it. Not sure which it is. But the effort did go awry.

Moonwalking with Einstein: The Art and Science of Remembering Everything ReviewWhether you have memory problems (can't recall the name of someone you met a week ago?) or not, you're likely to improve your memory after reading this book. Even if you don't - but odds are you will - it makes for fascinating reading.
It definitely was a major aid for me and I do think of it as a unique "self help" book, one that can have immediate results, helping to make life easier, alleviate tricky memory issues and more. I think it is important to disclose that I'm a Baby Boomer and my memory seems to have worsened with age. I used to recall the name of nearly everyone I met as well as both major and minor actors and actresses, all of my teachers (from kindergarten through high school) as well as the first and last names of every one of my high school classmates. I could recall even tiny details of books read long ago.
But Moonwalking with Einstein goes far beyond remembering the names of acqaintances. It can help make your daily life easier, aiding you when you try to find lost items - or keep them from getting lost in the first place- and actually train you to find ways to improve your memory.
For added fun, the author includes examples of people who have amazing abilities to recall things. I wondered if at least one of them could give Vegas a run for its money or even be banned from casinos. Although I don't plan to test my abilities in Vegas, I have been practicing in casual card games, with gratifying results. The surprised looks from friends and family members was worth the cost of the book.
I'd strongly recommend you give this one a try. The techniques can even be fun for a whole family to share - and test -together. And c'mon...how can you pass up a book which explores "the art and science of remembering everything"?Moonwalking with Einstein: The Art and Science of Remembering Everything Overview

The New Digital Storytelling: Creating Narratives with New Media ReviewThis review is cross posted at: [...]
Bryan Alexander's The New Digital Storytelling, Creating New Narratives With New Media is an excellent, highly readable, and comprehensive treatment of storytelling in our digital world. Dr. Alexander manages in 230 pages of text to capture the universe of available methods, processes, resources and tools available to storytellers, as of 2010. His 36 pages of notes and bibliography includes an exhaustive list of websites and sources used.
Dr. Alexander aimed his book at "creators and would-be practitioners," storytellers looking for new digital ideas, to include teachers, marketers, and communications managers. Whatever your background, he assures in the introduction, "herein you will find examples to draw on, practical uses to learn from, principles to apply, and some creative inspiration." I can't speak for those in the target audience, but as one with but a casual interest in storytelling, I can say Dr. Alexander delivered! Over the course of the couple of days of reading, I came up with about a half-dozen ideas and discovered my MacBook Pro has a lot more under the hood than I ever appreciated or used.
That said, Dr. Alexander warns that his book is not a "hands-on manual" on the tech media discussed. In fact, he assumes the reader will not "be a technologist" and the material is presented accordingly. He says:
"The New Digital Storytelling straddles the awkward yet practical divide between production and consumption, critique and project creation."
The book is divided into four parts:
Part I Storytelling: A Tale of Two Generations
In Chapter 1 Dr. Alexander provides an unambiguous meaning to digital storytelling: "Simply put, it is telling stories with digital technologies." The medium providing this review to you is my digital story about the book. But that is just the beginning; just about every digital device imaginable is being used to tell stories; blogs, social media, videos, and even in Twitter's 140 character limit, storytelling genres are emerging [readers at zenpudit.com will recall Charles Cameron's use of Twitter feeds following UBL's death]. As Alexander points out, "no sooner do we invent a medium than do we try to tell stories with it."
In Chapters 2 & 3, Dr. Alexander provides a history of digital storytelling in two parts; part one is what he calls "the first wave." From foundations in the 70's and 80's (his reference to the 1983 movie War Games brought back memories) to the evolution and importance of hypertext. Alexander asks, "How do hypertexts work as digital stories? Users--reader--experience hypertext as an unusual storytelling platform. We navigate along lexia ("multiple readable chunks") picking and choosing links to follow." This point truly "clicked" for me; one of the pleasures of reading zenpundit.com is the ubiquity of supporting links and how sometimes these links lead to unexpected, but valuable adventures. Often I've landed in a place I would never have found if not for the first "story." Alexander writes that Web 2.0 has allowed for "the ability to create content for zero software cost is historically significant, and now par for the course." He points out with the ubiquity of hardware (both PCs and mobile devices) and the social element (social media, for example) a means of of delivery and an architecture are in place where potential storytellers have a low barrier to entry--to get their story out. Alexander includes gaming devices (mobile and console) in the review of the Web 2.0 phenomena.
Part II New Platforms for Tales and Telling
Chapter 4 is a comprehensive review of Web 2.0 storytelling and the fragility of systems existing today, but perhaps gone tomorrow. Dr. Alexander covers distinct types of blogs used in sharing stories; blogs are ubiquitous and the barriers to entry negligible. He covers epistolary novels and diary/journal-based stories and provides numerous examples. One example was News from 1930, which "posts selections from each day's Wall Street Journal" during the early days of the Great Depression--in essence, a blog as a realtime history lesson. But as we know, the blogosphere is bigger than history, there also exists a market for various fictional stories which include reader interaction/collaboration. Also included are examples of character blogging (as Alexander notes: "Bloggers are characters") where personalities are revealed over time in a serial nature. Twitter has developed into a unique format for storytelling, forcing the user to pack as much as possible in precious few words/characters. Wikis, social images and Facebook are also covered and explained in ways that made me think about "how" I use social media.
Chapter 5 covers in detail social media storytelling...and this is one of my favorite chapters. Alexander explains podcasts in a way that was accessible and in a way that made me want to "do" a podcast! A podcast is limited to audio, but a web video places a whole new spin on our ability to digitally tell our stories. Chapter 5 is rich in resources and insight.
In chapters 6 and 7 Alexander discusses gaming and storytelling. This may be the part of the book that was over my head (I'm dubious of the real utility of "gamification" in a meaningful/productive way). One sentence did jump off the page: "One key aspect of game-based storytelling is the immersion of the player in the story's environment." Indeed, "intimacy" is an enormous missing ingredient in more than storytelling and absolutely necessary in proficiency in just about any endeavor. One other sentence made a big impression: "Children also learn a deep secret about art, which is that the less detailed the representation of a character, the easier it is for us to identify with him or her." I believe guys like the internet Oatmeal guy and the creator of Zen's recent post have figured out this phenomena isn't limited to children.
Part III Combinatorial Storytelling; or, The Dawn of New Narrative Forms
Chapters 8 through 11 covers the networked book, mobile devices, and alternate reality games. The networked book resonated with me because of something from my distant career on submarines (early 80's); we would write a story where periodically storytellers would add a sentence and half to an evolving text. The results were always amusing and never predictable. Networked books sound very similar to our collaborative efforts 30 years ago, but with the ubiquity of digital tools, opportunities abound. For example "transmedia storytelling," where "story content is distributed across multiple sites and media; the movie trilogy, an anthology of animated films, comics, computer games, a massively multiplayer online game, Web content, and additional DVD content." This dispersion of story content and the variety of venues allows users a more "immersive experience"---the intimacy Alexander described earlier. Mobile devices are literally changing just about every aspect of our world from political meetings, classrooms, clinics "now that those present can hit the Web for fact checking or peer support." An excellent recent example was the squashed attempt of the United States Naval Institute's board to change the organization's mission. Platforms like Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn were used to get the word out to members who took action. New tablet devices will continue to drive this phenomena. Alexander's treatment of alternate reality games revealed "worlds" created with our world by game participants of such products as Second Life.
Part IV Building Your Story
In the final chapters, Dr. Alexander provides example of "how to" build a digital story, using the classic Center for Digital Storytelling workshop model. For me, this was the most thought-provoking section. The description of how a workshop is conducted, the questions used to prompt creative/insightful "story-able" thought is worth the price of the book. Alexander inventories the software available for audio, images, video editing, publication, concept mapping, and other production tools. This inventory of tools describes the appropriateness of each with respect to the level of experience of the storyteller. Digital storytelling in education is covered in Chapter 14 and is a rich resource for parents and educators who want to leverage the digital world.
The New Digital Storytelling should be the standard guide for anyone who wants to use all the new digital gadgets available to tell their story; this book is an excellent one-stop resource. I plan to use what I've learned in the expansion of my family tree history to an A/V platform and have already built a to-do list to get started.
One closing thought; the irony isn't lost that this "book" about digital storytelling is made of paper, glue, and ink. I can only imagine what an adventure this would be if presented digitally where all the links were connected...a digital story on how to tell digital stories.
The New Digital Storytelling comes with my highest recommendation. Get this book, use those tools, and tell your stories. The New Digital Storytelling: Creating Narratives with New Media Overview

Think Stats ReviewIf your grasp of Programming exceeds your understanding of Basic Statistics, this book IS for you. As a University Statistics professor, I am constantly looking for reading materials that I can use to integrate Practical Statistics with programming. I am generally faced with the problem of having to mine Programming texts for Stats lessons, all too often I am faced with books that attempt to teach a programming language with examples from Freshman Statistics as an afterthought. (Too much of one, not enough of the other)
This book comes at the problem from the other side. Given that you already have a healthy grasp on programming and are trying to learn Statistics, each topic is presented with helpful, real-world data examples, and a step-by-step explanation of how to code the solutions. That makes this book excellent supplementary material for a Statistics class, or at the very least, a wonderful refresher for those returning to Statistics, with programming in mind.
Caution:
This book is NOT for you if you do NOT have a basic understanding of Programming. This book will NOT teach you to program using statistics. It is meant to teach you statistics using programming.Think Stats Overview

Blogs, Wikis, Podcasts, and Other Powerful Web Tools for Classrooms (Multimedia Kit): A Multimedia Kit for Professional Development ReviewNote: while there are some spoilers here, I will deliberately LEAVE THINGS OUT so you will have no choice to read his great book. I could not put it down and I learned so much, even though I've been Podcasting since September and Blogging (sort of) for two years.
Blogs, Wikis, Podcasts, and Other Powerful Web Tools for Classrooms by Will Richardson is a great resource for any teacher or instructional technologist who wants to integrate technology into the classroom. Will begins by quoting Tim Berners-Lee, inventor of the World Wide Web - the vision was that it was a "read-write web" - with web users not only collecting information but creating it as well. In his book, Will gives many examples of how to do this:
Blogs: great for class portals, an online filing cabinet, e-portfolios... but better: a collaborative space for students and teachers to react to questions and scenarios - all online where Will has arranged for his students to meet authors or students from other schools to discuss a topic. Student writing becomes authentic, relevant. Will recommends that teachers blog themselves before introducing blogs to their students (just like a teacher of writing should be a writer himself, or a reading teacher should read on her own). Will dedicates an entire chapter to "getting started" with blogs - with juicy tips and tricks, as well as resources for new bloggers.
Wikis: after a discussion of the origin of the wiki (wiki-wiki - Hawaiian for "quick") and a discussion of the most well-known wiki, Wikipedia, Will discusses the uses for wikis in school: you can create an online text for your classroom, a lesson plan exchange for teachers, and he gives a good introduction to creating your own wiki using PBWiki.
RSS: OK- this is where my brain began to melt. I was blown away by the difference between what I THOUGHT RSS was good for and all of the ideas that Will has for them. To quote his chapter on RSS: "I think it's the one technology that you should start using today, right now, this minute. And tomorrow, you should teach your students to use it." After reading this chapter I did, and I will. Seriously. This chapter was an epiphany for me.
Podcasts: amateur radio, with lots of possibilities. There are many resources given in his book but the Education Podcast Network is the best known and a great place to start. Will gives some great tips on software to use like Audacity - and how to use Skype to record interviews (using software from http://www.powergramo.com ).
I hate to sound like PBS's Reading Rainbow, but if you want to find out more, you really should buy and read his book. It is very well written, organized, and is an invaluable resource for any teacher willing to try technology in their classroom.Blogs, Wikis, Podcasts, and Other Powerful Web Tools for Classrooms (Multimedia Kit): A Multimedia Kit for Professional Development Overview
