Ghetto at the Center of the World: Chungking Mansions, Hong Kong ReviewChungking Mansions is an infamous building in Hong Kong. It is a labyrinth of exotica, adventure , and otherness. In many ways it is a shadowy unknown place to many who live in Hong Kong and the countless travelers it attracts yearly. What is for sure is that we want to know more about it. Specifically more about the eclectic array of people that walk and work in its corridors each day. This fine work by Gordon Mathews satiates this curiosity quite fully.
Exploring the history of the building, its many personalities, the goods and businesses that pass through, and the new transformations, Gordon Mathews produces a landmark text. This work is particularly compelling because it addresses some misconceptions about Chungking Mansions, namely its safety and criminality and redresses these issues. It shows us that the building is intricately placed in what Mathews terms `low end globalization'. Millions of phones sold in this building sold by Pakistani tradesmen can be traced to the streets of Lagos. Illegal workers support their families in Calcutta by washing dishes or handing out flyers for the many restaurants in the building. Sex workers save money to start businesses back in their home countries. The most contemporary feature of the building is the rise in African traders passing through, this phenomenon is explored in detail and provides context for the transformations visible in the streets around Chungking Mansions.
Another important contribution this text offers is that of acknowledging asylum seekers in Hong Kong and showing their particular struggles in the territory. Many of these asylum seekers who have fled torture or the threat of political assassination frequent Chungking Mansions and contribute to an understanding of the place as a bourgeois location. The truth being that whilst the building is populated with people from disparate parts of the world, they are often the middle class entrepreneurs of their countries, and many of the businesses in Chungking Mansions themselves can be comfortably profitable.
Mathews is astute in pointing out that the fortunes and future of Chungking Mansions are tied to global caprices. Changes in visa regulations, the Olympics, and even 9/11 have changed the people and business practices that occupy Chungking Mansions. These factors reconfirm another important point that the author makes, whilst Chungking Mansions is in Hong Kong, it is not `of' Hong Kong. As such this book will tell you much about the building, much about trade with China, and much about low end globalization, it will tell you less however about Hong Kong. After all Chungking Mansions is an island of otherness in this city, a ghetto at the center of the world.

Sad Monsters: Growling on the Outside, Crying on the Inside ReviewThis book consists of forty brief vignettes about various monsters, some of whom are, as the title implies, sad. Not every monster cries himself to sleep at night, though; some quite enjoy their lives of monstrosity. Most of them have romantic problems. It's not easy to be a monster on the prowl in the dating sense, what with also prowling in the nomming sense
It may interest you to know that the author, Frank Lesser, writes for The Colbert Report. This sets some pretty high standards for the book to follow. Thankfully, Sad Monsters was just what I hoped it would be. Puns and irony abound, along with some cute postmodernism (ain't that reevaluation of that monster and his secret pain just precious?).
You get a really wide range of monsters in here. Lesser definitely isn't sticking only to the most popular (zombies, werewolves, vampires). Some of my favorite vignettes were Godzilla wondering what the point of all the stomping is (also, did you know that Godzilla likes M*A*S*H as much as I do?), formerly people-munching diets going vegan or carb-free, peaceful zombies being chased by humans, unsuccessful monsters like Count Macula (who just might work at my office) and Igor's résumé. Pretty much each of the little stories will make you bust out laughing, snort, groan or teehee.
Reading Sad Monsters takes somewhere around an hour. This is an estimate, since I read multiple books at one time; suffice it to say that it is quite short. I feel like this is an excellent book to pull out to amuse your friends with or to buy quirky friends for Christmas (don't know what to get them but know they love Colbert style humor?). Plus, how cute is that monster on the cover!?!Sad Monsters: Growling on the Outside, Crying on the Inside Overview

Covenant: A Novel ReviewSee book summary above.
I love scientific thrillers, especially when put to a good story and a fast plot line.
I see this becoming a favorite series for me.
Though the protagonist, Ethan Warner, doesn't seem to be the smartest or the best
planner when attacking something, he always seems to get lucky. It takes a little
stretch of the imagination but it's still a satisfying read.
Well done!Covenant: A Novel Overview

Fiction Ruined My Family ReviewI downloaded this book from Audible, read by the author. Not always a great thing when an author reads her own memoir, but a HUGE advantage when you're Jeanne Darst (of whom I'd never heard before Janet Maslin's NYTimes review). So I'm walking around with my iPod listening and cackling and sometimes helplessly gasping with laughter (husband watching wide-eyed--I am usually a pretty tough crowd). LOL has become a cliche but seriously I was LOLing all over the place (in my car, on my bike, throughout the home) This book is HILARIOUS, touching, poignant, inspiring etc but mostly HILARIOUS. I love memoirs and especially those by smart independent women who've had a spot of bother here and there in their lives . . . I've listened to or read them all, devouring them as they appear. But this is the best. By far. I don't envy Jeanne her home life, the years of having to parent her parents (and her therapist at one point). But I hugely admire her honesty, her wit, her unsparing clear focus on her own actions. And damn she is funny. The section on ahem crabs . . . words fail. Well they fail me, they do not fail this writer. Not a false note. Totally recommend.

Swing Your Sword: Leading the Charge in Football and Life ReviewAs a Tech fan and former student, I was interested in finally hearing Leach's side of the story. This book turned out to be so much more. I'm so glad that this is more of an autobiography, and that we learned more from Mike Leach's own pen about his life and his history. I agree completely with Donald Trump... Mike Leach was screwed... and the good 'ol boy network in Lubbock will continue to assassinate his character, lie about his actions, etc. in order to legitimize their screwing of Mike Leach. But in the end, Leach has won. He kept his honor, his principles, and his sense of humor about the whole thing. The scumbags in the bell tower have to live with themselves, and that can't be easy. Great book Mike, and I'm glad I actually purchased it and read it.Swing Your Sword: Leading the Charge in Football and Life Overview

Think Stats ReviewIf your grasp of Programming exceeds your understanding of Basic Statistics, this book IS for you. As a University Statistics professor, I am constantly looking for reading materials that I can use to integrate Practical Statistics with programming. I am generally faced with the problem of having to mine Programming texts for Stats lessons, all too often I am faced with books that attempt to teach a programming language with examples from Freshman Statistics as an afterthought. (Too much of one, not enough of the other)
This book comes at the problem from the other side. Given that you already have a healthy grasp on programming and are trying to learn Statistics, each topic is presented with helpful, real-world data examples, and a step-by-step explanation of how to code the solutions. That makes this book excellent supplementary material for a Statistics class, or at the very least, a wonderful refresher for those returning to Statistics, with programming in mind.
Caution:
This book is NOT for you if you do NOT have a basic understanding of Programming. This book will NOT teach you to program using statistics. It is meant to teach you statistics using programming.Think Stats Overview

Blogs, Wikis, Podcasts, and Other Powerful Web Tools for Classrooms (Multimedia Kit): A Multimedia Kit for Professional Development ReviewNote: while there are some spoilers here, I will deliberately LEAVE THINGS OUT so you will have no choice to read his great book. I could not put it down and I learned so much, even though I've been Podcasting since September and Blogging (sort of) for two years.
Blogs, Wikis, Podcasts, and Other Powerful Web Tools for Classrooms by Will Richardson is a great resource for any teacher or instructional technologist who wants to integrate technology into the classroom. Will begins by quoting Tim Berners-Lee, inventor of the World Wide Web - the vision was that it was a "read-write web" - with web users not only collecting information but creating it as well. In his book, Will gives many examples of how to do this:
Blogs: great for class portals, an online filing cabinet, e-portfolios... but better: a collaborative space for students and teachers to react to questions and scenarios - all online where Will has arranged for his students to meet authors or students from other schools to discuss a topic. Student writing becomes authentic, relevant. Will recommends that teachers blog themselves before introducing blogs to their students (just like a teacher of writing should be a writer himself, or a reading teacher should read on her own). Will dedicates an entire chapter to "getting started" with blogs - with juicy tips and tricks, as well as resources for new bloggers.
Wikis: after a discussion of the origin of the wiki (wiki-wiki - Hawaiian for "quick") and a discussion of the most well-known wiki, Wikipedia, Will discusses the uses for wikis in school: you can create an online text for your classroom, a lesson plan exchange for teachers, and he gives a good introduction to creating your own wiki using PBWiki.
RSS: OK- this is where my brain began to melt. I was blown away by the difference between what I THOUGHT RSS was good for and all of the ideas that Will has for them. To quote his chapter on RSS: "I think it's the one technology that you should start using today, right now, this minute. And tomorrow, you should teach your students to use it." After reading this chapter I did, and I will. Seriously. This chapter was an epiphany for me.
Podcasts: amateur radio, with lots of possibilities. There are many resources given in his book but the Education Podcast Network is the best known and a great place to start. Will gives some great tips on software to use like Audacity - and how to use Skype to record interviews (using software from http://www.powergramo.com ).
I hate to sound like PBS's Reading Rainbow, but if you want to find out more, you really should buy and read his book. It is very well written, organized, and is an invaluable resource for any teacher willing to try technology in their classroom.Blogs, Wikis, Podcasts, and Other Powerful Web Tools for Classrooms (Multimedia Kit): A Multimedia Kit for Professional Development Overview
