The Art of Talking So That People Will Listen: Getting Through to Family, Friends & Business Associates ReviewI feel a need to write a review of this book for two simple reasons: Number one is that it has had a profound effect on my life regarding my self-image and effectiveness in dealing with others, and number two, it will do the same for you. The bonus is that just by learning the information presented by Dr. Swets, it will also have a tremendously positive impact on those you love as well.
The title gives a hint (yet can't possibly do justice) to the actual wisdom and teachings contained in the book. Obviously, most people, because they are talking, feel as though they are also communicating. But that's not so. Just hearing you or me talk does not necessarily mean that the other person is "listening." And unless they are listening, what you and I say will not have much impact. A key to personal success is talking so that the other person not only will listen, but be inclined to take your point of view as well. This is true regardless of whether one is dealing with spouse, small and teenage children, friends, neighbors, employees, employers, customers, prospects, or that person you may meet just one time in your life.
I love what Dr. Swets says on page four: Communication that wins a positive response from others can provide you with a new way of life. Nothing is more essential to success in any area of your life than the ability to communicate well. Nothing can compare to the joy of communicating love, of being heard and understood completely, of discovering some profound insight from another's mind . . . Self-concepts are enhanced, attitudes broadened, beliefs depended, perspectives clarified, hopes restored, frustrations dissolved, hurt feeling healed.
Although much of what Dr. Swets teaches will show you how to live life with a minimum of personal 'hassles' with others (in other words, 'prevention'), he also includes a brilliant chapter dealing with "Conflict Resolution" for those occasions when conflicts do occur, as they inevitably will. The fact is, there are times when conflict and misunderstandings will take place. When that happens, there needs to be a positive, win-win solution. Dr. Swets provides this in a simple-to-understand- and-apply fashion. Reading that one chapter will ensure that you'll never again have to feel as though a conflict with anyone in your life cannot be worked out. It is simply magnificent information, and worth many, many times the price of the book itself.
I feel I could write volumes just on what I learned from this book, however, I'd rather you purchase the book yourself and learn from it first hand. Let's put it this way: The venerable Dr. Norman Vincent Peale, in a very complimentary Forward to this book, put it wonderfully well when he wrote, .. . a book that outlines procedures of communication with the completeness of Dr. Swets' study becomes a working manual that can be invaluable. And I do not know of a book that more comprehensively covers the entire subject of communication. Moreover the author himself communicates in a clear and understandable manner . . . He knows how to write so people will understand, how to talk so people will listen . . .
And may I add one more note? In all the classics dealing with communication and people skills (and The Art Of Talking So That People Will Listen ranks right up there with the classics) such as How To Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie, How To Have Confidence And Power In Dealing With People by Les Giblin, as well as those on general success such as Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill, the great authors all teach in terms of "universal principles", natural laws that have stood the test of time and will transfer from situation to unique situation. Yes, techniques change from time to time, but principles never do. The principles taught by Dr. Swets will work for you, your children, your grandchildren, etc. I could not personally give this book a higher recommendation.

Talk Less, Say More: Three Habits to Influence Others and Make Things Happen ReviewI do not think there are many people that will find this book useful. Most people will be in one of two camps:
1.) If you think about communication at all, probably nothing in this book will be new to you.
2.) If the information in this book *is* news to you, then its style will not be helpful to you.
The book is intentionally short and takes a very imperative tone. I read the whole thing in under 30 minutes. The problem is, with nuanced topics like communication, when you distill them down that far, you end up with recommendations like - I am not making these up, they are taken directly from the book:
"Be tolerant of different viewpoints"
"Contain the outbursts"
"Show respect"
Those are particularly egregious examples, but my point remains, as I read this book every page just felt blindingly obvious.
That would be fine, if the book were evocative and resonated. Plenty of books in this genre tell us what we already know but do so in an emotional way so that it really sticks, or speaks to us anew. Patrick Lencioni's "Five Dysfunctions of a Team" is a great example - the whole book is an evocative 'fable', a story, with well-developed characters that bring his points to life.
By contrast, Talk Less, Say More distills even the stories down. Here's an example, verbatim:
"Sharon learned the hard way that firing off an e-mail was not the right way to thank the vice president who interviewed her. The vice president chose another equally qualified applicant, in part because the other applicant took the time to send a handwritten thank-you note. Sharon lost the job by not noticing that the vice president valued a personal approach. If she'd scanned his desk during the interview, she would have noticed many handwritten notes."
That's not evocative at all. All of the stories are just like that - very matter-of-fact with no interesting characters or anything memorable. There's nothing emotional to any of them.
In fact, I found nothing emotionally compelling about the entire book, and that's why I say that if this information *is* new to you, I doubt you'll be able to meaningfully use it. Dieken provides checklists at the end of each section for what points you should work on, but if you have the self-awareness to fill out those checklists, then by definition you don't need them.
I'm sure when Ms. Dieken works personally with clients, they benefit immensely because she's able to observe them and give personalized feedback, but the value isn't just in the words she's saying but her demeanor, her engagement, her personal connection: all the things she talks dispassionately about in this book.
Some people might find this an entertaining read, but it's hard to imagine anyone reading this book and actually using it to become a better communicator.Talk Less, Say More: Three Habits to Influence Others and Make Things Happen Overview

You Can Negotiate Anything ReviewI am back reordering this book to hand out to some new employees and I saw the previous review, which slammed this book. Had it been a Ken Blanchard book, I probably would have moved me (and my cheese) over to the purchase area and forgotten it. However, this book, "You Can Negotiate...." is one of the most influential books I have ever read, with lessons that I use daily in running a 100 mil plus division of a Fortune 1000 company.
Bottom line is that this book is the best negotiation book I have ever read. ( And I've read a lot of them... not to mention way too many seminars)
Mr. Cohen is entertaining and reveals the common elements of all negotiation, whether it is in business or your personal life.
Read it, enjoy it, and learn. It's a classic.

How to Instantly Connect with Anyone: 96 All-New Little Tricks for Big Success in Relationships ReviewThis book is like a continuation to Leil Lowndes' How to Talk to Anyone. You should read that book first since it covers the basics, before reading this one.
The techniques referred to in this book are a bit more "advanced," you could say, and they generally apply to various scenarios one could be faced with, and there are no shortage of examples especially in the professional environment.
EP, or emotional prediction, is an essential concept covered in this book that has shaped my behavior and attitude during social interactions.
Overall, a great read and highly recommended.

The Power of Eye Contact: Your Secret for Success in Business, Love, and Life ReviewAfter reading this book, I learned so much and was so impressed, I hunted Mr. Ellsberg down and attended an incredible eye gazing workshop with him. Find him and read this book. The material seems so simple, but it is extremely confronting and enlightening. Just to look into someone's eyes like that opened up a new channel of communication for me. I never realized how much I used to avoid eye contact, probably out of fear. Now I use it with my family, my friends and even during business meetings. It opened up a door into the subconscious, and a door to the truth behind every pair of eyes I meet. This book is full of incredible in-sights. Read it. ~ HitchThe Power of Eye Contact: Your Secret for Success in Business, Love, and Life Overview

How to Win Friends and Influence People in the Digital Age ReviewDo you like awful jargon? Bad writing? Meaningless "improvements"? Do you really want to buy a book with gobbledygook sentences like "Today's biggest enemy of lasting influence is the sector of both personal and corporate musing that concerns itself with the art of creating impressions without consulting the science of need ascertainment"?
Frankly, this unfortunate "revision and updating" of the Carnegie book is a big step backward---a step you can avoid making by buying the original book, which is actually very readable. Whereas this "new" version is so full of mind-numbing jargon you'll want to pull your hair out.
Conclusion: Either this book is a tranparent ploy to make money, regardless of the quality of the work, or the book's owners employed the wrong people to "revise and update" it. Not sure which it is. But the effort did go awry.
