Lament: The Faerie Queen's Deception (Gathering of Faerie) ReviewAs a rule, I generally find the fiction directed at young women frustrating. So often, it's populated by Kicky Young Heroines with *just enough* strength and self-reliance to be bothered when they ultimately have to be rescued by the male love interest, but not quite enough to get out of trouble without his help. Too many authors lack the skill to create dramatic tension without placing the main character in a danger she just can't escape on her own, and the most dramatically convenient means of rescue is usually her love interest. The underlying message of, "no matter how strong you are, you're still a girl and girls get rescued by men who think they're pretty," is pervasive.
So, it was with certain reservations that I picked up Maggie Stiefvater's "Lament: The Faerie Queen's Deception" on the recommendation of a friend. In my head I was already trying to think of diplomatic ways to compliment a Young Adult Faerie Book without having to point out Kicky Ineffectual Heroines and overly perky and harmless (or unreasonably malicious and evil) fae.
"Lament" blew all that right out of the water.
First, the core of the story is about women. Deirdre's relationship with her mother and grandmother, her relationship with her aunt, her relationship with the Faerie Queen, all played out across the story of a young woman making the choices that will determine the course of her life. The love story, though woven through the tale, supports the focus on Deirdre instead of overwhelming it; this is a refreshing change from the languishing heroine waiting for life to start for her and bemoaning her singlehood (usually because 'normal guys' can't handle her Special Uniqueness) until magically the perfect guy comes along who just happens to be [insert dramatic and predictable otherworldly cliche].
Part of this comes from the fact that Stiefvater balances the love interest with a strong core friendship that it can't replace, and part of it comes from the fact that like many of us, Deirdre has to make most of her really hard decisions alone, and she's faced with a lot of very realistic complication in the way she has to balance the relationships in her life. Stiefvater places her protagonist in situations where she has to acknowledge and consider the very different sorts of love and relationships in her life, and can't simply let fear or infatuation guide her choices. It creates a much better dramatic tension and a much better read than simply placing her in an inescapable danger.
Stiefvater's fae were another pleasant surprise. Instead of the benign, ethereal beauties or the deliberately evil monsters I've come to expect from popular fiction (not to mention the giggly little winged flower sprites), the fae in "Lament" are complex and subtle. The word most appropriate to the faeries of the older tales is 'perilous', and these fae most certainly are. Are they good guys? Are they bad guys? Neither, really; they're somewhere outside of morality and bound to older, simpler, more brutal laws than human perception of right and wrong. Stiefvater *nails* the notion of the faerie bargain and the faerie favor perfectly, capturing the layers of gift, threat, and obligation. She manages to make them alien and familiar enough to be completely unsettling.
The book is a satisfying and well-crafted read. I finished it in a single sitting, and have read it again since. And having done so, I can recommend it without reservation or hesitiation. Read this book. Seriously.Lament: The Faerie Queen's Deception (Gathering of Faerie) Overview

Flip ReviewBritish author Martyn Bedford's first foray into YA literature is a believable bluff that will keep the pages moving. His hero Alex Gray, a clarinet and chess-playing sensitive kid from a London suburb, wakes up one day in a much more muscular and athletic body known as Philip "Flip" Garamond. Quickly introduced, the problems Alex confronts in life as Flip at home and at school propel the novel forward, as the boy is subjected to all manner of contradictions not only in looks but in lifestyles (and girlfriends -- plural, in dashing Flip's case). Eventually ethics filter in as Alex struggles with the disadvantages and begins to enjoy a few advantages of being someone he is not. Should he try to find his way back? Can he? Where is his own body? And is it even alive?
About the only one who recognizes Alex to NOT be Flip is the Garamond family's retriever, Beagle, who gives him a growl each time he sees him. Soon, though, Alex finds friends on the web -- folks who have experienced something called PE (no, not physical education -- psychic evacuation) like him. It's when a soul jumps the rails and lands in another body due to extreme physical duress or death of its own. Is it any wonder why Alex hesitates to type his own name in the Google search box? How'd you like to read your own obit?
Many interesting angles develop as Flip begins to perplex family and friends alike with some "new" habits (really his old ones). When he abandons such avocations as cricket and crudeness, his lads are REALLY worried. Where's good old Flip, the "boys-will-be-boys" type if ever there was one? Then he falls for a sensitive and intelligent girl -- not just a girl with a great body. This is the last straw for the rest. But Bedford never plays with his own premise, treating it with all the seriousness it deserves, reserving his humor for some sharp dialogue exchanges between Alex (as Flip) and both his new sister and his new girlfriend. It's all well done, completely believable in its unrealistic way, and wonderfully entertaining. Reluctant and serious readers alike should take to it. Ditto boys and girls. Some language, but nothing too bad, makes it good for upper middle school and older. Strongly recommended as solid YA sci-fi fun.Flip Overview

Despite her power over the other mermaids, Anais doesn't fool Luce. Luce can see the wickedness at the heart of the captivating mermaid and she wants to stop it. The timahk has always governed the behaviors of the mermaids, but not everyone is willing to follow the rules. Luce quickly learns that some rules have to be broken, and that she might have to stand alone. By the end of the novel, Luce is faced with a decision that will change the way mermaids conduct themselves forever. She is the key to restoring humanity to a race of beings that have been consumed with revenge for a long time.
Lost Voices is captivating from the first page! Sarah Porter's beautiful, descriptive language paints vivid pictures of beauty and pain. The sensuous descriptions of each character's emotion force the reader to bond with the girls in the book. As you read, you can feel Luce's pain in her memories, and the lust and greed of Anaise. The plot is fast paced, but perfectly developed; the tension that is building among the characters is felt on every page. As you read, you can't help but notice the struggles of humanity that are felt in some of the modern classics of our times (i.e. Lord of the Flies, The Chocolate War). This series will certainly be worthy of shelf space next to Mr. Cormier and Mr. Golding.

Bite Me ReviewBite Me is one of those books that has been sitting on my shelf forever and I'm just now getting around to reading. It's also one of those books I wish I'd picked up the second it came in my mailbox.
While the first couple of chapters start out slow, Bite Me quickly wrapped me up in lots of suspense, drama, and romance. It was a nice change of pace from many of the other paranormal books out there because, instead of fawning over the vampires and their hotness, these characters are kicking vampire butt. In fact, my favorite thing about the book was the characters. They had spunk and personality, which added so much to the story. I also loved all of the different paranormal creatures introduced.
Like I mentioned, the plot moves pretty quickly and there's a lot of fun vampire-butt-kicking, as well as some romance and drama.
The one thing I do feel like I need to mention is that while this is marketed towards YA, there's a lot of romance that I feel would also be more suited for an adult novel. But, that's just my personal opinion and while it didn't take away from the story for me, I just wanted everyone to be aware of that.
Overall, I highly recommend this.

Cloaked ReviewIf you are familiar with Alex Flinn's work, you are already aware of the fantastic, whimsical feel of her stories. Like in her debut novel Beastly, with Cloaked, Flinn crafts a charming, magical story that will delight young readers, as well those as who are simply young at heart.
The thing you have to remember about Flinn's work is that is it is not meant to be taken completely seriously - it has an airy quality that lends itself to her magical storylines. Cloaked is a "modern fairy-tale mash-up" that is about an unlikely hero, Johnny. Johnny is a seventeen-year-old boy who works at his family business, repairing shoes. He is feeling down on himself, because he feels his life is going nowhere, when a beautiful Princess from a foreign land enlists him to help find her "bruzzer" (Princess speak for Brother). Johnny is soon swept up in' a whirlwind adventure that had him traveling to globe and running for his life.
You follow Johnny, accompanied by his best friend Meg, as he takes on his dangerous quest. There are talking animals, a magic teleporting cloak, scary bikers, crazy witches and two terrifying giants. Johnny is an interesting character who I found to be incredibly humorous. He could be a bit slow on the uptake though - sometimes I found myself in awe of his cluelessness (I don't know if that's a word, but it is now); especially when it comes to girls. But overall, it is easy to root for Johnny, everyone loves the underdog.
I feel like Cloaked was a great read, for the type of book it was meant to be. Like I said before - it's not a serious book; it is meant to be light, entertaining and whimsical. If you look at it under a microscope, I am sure you would find flaws. Often times plot advances aren't exactly logical - but they aren't suppose to be. You aren't suppose to examine it closely, you are simply suppose to reveal in the experience of it. Flinn was trying to emulate the excitement, innocence and magic of a fairytale and I feel like she succeeded.
If you go into reading Cloaked with an open mind, I am sure you will find it an enjoyable read. It is a charming and delightful story that can be devoured in a sitting.Cloaked Overview

Glimmerglass (Faeriewalker, Book 1) ReviewThis book introduces a rather different city of Avalon, one that is midway between the world of faerie and that of man, that you can actually find on a map and travel by airplane almost to its gates, where both some magics and some tech can work, and is the only portal for trade between the two worlds.
But the story is not about Avalon itself, but rather a 16 year old, Dana, with a great voice, an alcoholic mother, and a very absent father, about whom Dana knows almost nothing except that he's some high mucky-muck in the Avalon world of politics, and whom her mother fled from for reasons that seem to change every time Dana asks about him. Finally getting thoroughly fed up with trying to handle the embarrassments and messes her mother keeps making for her, Dana decides to go to Avalon to find her father, figuring it couldn't be any worse than the life she's currently leading.
What she finds in Avalon is not quite what she expected, as she finds herself immediately involved in the political shenanigans of the Avalon ruling council, with sub-texts of fomented discord by the battle for supremacy between the ruling factions of Faerie. Here she finds the beginnings of romance right alongside distrust of her own ability to properly evaluate other people's character, and where everyone seems to be out to use her for their own ends.
Dana is a likeable and quite believable teen throughout this work, hardworking, independent, and with a solid moral compass. Her mental state mirrors that of many teens who feel alienated and put upon by the vagaries of life, who just know that 'things will be better' somewhere else, or with different parents, and the inevitable 'knowledge' that she's already an adult - and why doesn't the world recognize that fact? Her growth through the trials of this book is nicely portrayed, and her final conclusion may surprise some readers, but actually makes good sense.
Most of the other characters of this book are not given very much development room, and quite a few of them come across as near-stereotypes. The descriptive work on the city of Avalon is quite sparse, making it difficult for me to really 'see' it as a real city. The plot developments come thick and fast, but I did feel that some information was inappropriately withheld from the reader for too long just to heighten suspense and keep confusion reigning supreme. There are many threads and world-building snippets that are introduced but not given any resolution here, which I suppose will be the subject of further books in this series. But as it is, the ending feels like something of an anti-climax, both happening too fast and only resolving a small portion of the entire story arc.
This is a world that shows much promise. If further books can flesh out what has been started here at the same level of immediacy and relevance that this book displays, then this will be a very good series, good reading both for teens and adults.

Falling Under ReviewQuick & Dirty: A wonderful plot and engaging characters mixed with mayhem and a fascinating Under realm make this a delicious and highly entertaining read.
Opening Sentence: Everything changed the night I saw the burning man fall from the sky.
The Review:
In the small town of Serendipity Falls, Theia Alderson lives a sheltered life. In her dreams, Theia is pursued by a dangerous yet seductive stranger. The surroundings are unfamiliar because Theia has fallen Under. In the Under realm, her irresistible suitor shows her things that Theia can hardly fathom. Theia's dreams soon become reality when her dark suitor, Haden Black, shows up as the new student in her school. As their connection grows stronger, Theia has trouble resisting Haden and the horrifying world of Under. Now that she has fallen under his spell, will she be able to save her soul?
I didn't know what I expected when I set out to read Falling Under. I never read reviews for books that I'm interested in because I hate spoilers. I was intrigued by the synopsis. In any case, I would have read the book based solely on its beautiful cover. Even though things start slowly, the story still managed to hold my attention. I'm pleased to say that Falling Under ended up being one of the best YA novels that I've read this year. Falling Under is an edgy and layered world filled with danger and despair. This darkly riveting story is intense and certainly stands on its own in the YA paranormal genre. Ms. Hayes exposes the reader to a macabre world and all its dangers. The world-building is truly inventive and the characters are intriguing. The powerful sexual and emotional undertones give this story an edge that you rarely see in a YA novel.
One of the many exciting elements of the story is Theia's forbidden relationship with Haden. Theia knows that she's placing herself in grave danger, both emotionally and physically, but the connection that she shares with Haden is undeniable. Theia and Haden exchange some pretty risqué dialogue. The attraction, teasing and wordplay between these two is completely enthralling. Without a doubt, Haden is the strongest character in the book. The unbeatable combination of the dark, twisted, sexual and dangerous makes for a wonderfully complex male lead. Ms. Hayes delivers richly detailed characterizations, pulling the reader "under" with ease.
Theia has realistic flaws, which makes her interesting, but there's nothing to really set her apart from other protagonists in the crowded YA paranormal genre. I was left with just a so-so impression of Theia. I liked her character, but I didn't love her character. I do sympathize with her struggles to shape her own identity and break free from her father's death grip. Theia was raised by her father in a very regimented, sterile and structured environment. Her "Father" is very cold and Type A, bordering on sociopathic. For the most part, I like the fact that Theia was a very mature and practical young adult. She did have a few moments of girl weaknesses and became obsessed about being with Haden a la Bella's feelings toward Edward in New Moon. Needless to say, at this point I wanted to slit my own wrists. I think the "obsession" trope in YA novels is often heavy-handed, misplaced and unnecessarily overwrought. Generally speaking, it can only be resolved one or two ways. The heroine has a ridiculous epiphany that leads her to conclude that she is an individual with her own personality and life goals before she met her otherworldly hottie, and that life will go on and aforementioned otherworldly hottie will not objectify her and define her self-worth. Alternatively, she will forsake everything to get her dangerous, worthless, and good-for-nothing otherworldly hottie who turns out to be the good guy in disguise. Don't let this plot point deter you because there are many other good elements to this story and the ending will surprise you.
Falling Under is a fantastic debut novel. The story is beautifully written and there's plenty of suspense and intrigue. Falling Under is a highly addictive entry in the YA paranormal genre. I can hardly wait to fall Under the spell of the next installment.
Notable Scene:
And I hungered for something elusive, yet the air was thick with the promise of it.
It surprised me, the new potent feeling. And it was the surprise that frightened me more than the actual rush of hormones. I couldn't control feelings that came out of nowhere.
I leaned against the rail and my heart stopped.
Haden watched me from below as he led a nimble blonde onto the floor of gyrating teenagers. She stared at him, awestruck like he was some kind of rock star. God, I thought she might be right. He murmured something into her ear, but he smiled at me -the kind of smile that signals the demise of the canary to the whims of the cat.
He hooked one arm around her waist and raised a brow to me. I wanted to hate him; the burn seared my heart. When he turned her to face me, my breath caught in my throat. She had no idea he was using her as a pawn to assert his control over me, but I'm not sure she would have minded even if she had known. I doubt, had the tables been turned, I would have cared. To be enveloped in his arms, surrounded by his scent, guided through a dance by his steady hands...No, I would gladly have played marionette to his puppet master too.
She ground against him, not unlike Donny but without Donny's finesse. Or charm, for that matter. But I suppose charm wasn't what that kind of dancing was really about. I tightened my grip on the rail if not my emotions, but nothing could make me look away. He'd trapped me in his sinful gaze designed to weaken my will, to raise the stakes in the battle for my heart. Maybe my soul. He wanted me to know what I was missing even as he made it clear I couldn't have it. And I was depraved enough to let him.
Haden gripped the blonde's hips, holding her firmly against his pelvis. She let her head fall to the side, exposing the long white column of her neck. He sent me one more evil grin and kissed her neck.
My knees buckled. I felt the sensation of his lips on my skin. The kiss felt like a shock that started on my neck and traveled on my nerve endings all the way down to my toes. His hand skimmed slowly from her hip to her stomach...my stomach. As the sensation crept slowly towards my breasts, my breath hitched.

This Dark Endeavor: The Apprenticeship of Victor Frankenstein ReviewAfter turning the final page of This Dark Endeavor, I immediately wanted to go search out and re-read my battered copy of Frankenstein. If this book has the same effect on the young audience it targets, then it will indeed have served a noble purpose. While I wasn't immediately engaged by this story that seemed to take a bit too long to get rolling, it wasn't long before my imagination was totally taken in by the fine writing, the depth of characterizations and the thrilling adventure.
The author does an amazing job at achieving balance in a story that is at times gruesome and haunting, and sometimes just hold your breath, edge of your seat thrilling. Victor's narrative voice is strong and true, and the dialogue is masterfully done. Obsession lies at the root of this story and here we get an intriguing look at the genesis of one of the most famous obsessions in literature. Teens will be captivated by Victor's quest for the elixir of life and will willingly follow him anywhere in his attempt to save his brother. They will relate to Victor's love/hate relationship with his twin brother, and his jealousy over the beautiful Elizabeth.
Heart wrenching emotion, villainy, alchemy, and love all combine much as they did in Shelley's masterpiece to form a story that is a worthy prequel to a classic. This will appeal to young adults with a thirst for adventure, especially boys who will be quick to place themselves in Victor's shoes. Elizabeth is a strong character who will also broaden the appeal to young girls who enjoy period fiction. Give this one to fans of Yancey's The Monstrumologist. While it does not provide the monsters, it does provide a literary examination of the dark side of human nature perfect for those with a thirst to examine their own obsessions. Fins Are Forever ReviewOH WOW, I love this series!!! This book was Crabbtastic!! In Fins are Forever the story continues right where Forgive My Fins left off with Lily being madly in love with Quince but deciding that she is interested in giving up her crown in Thalassinia as future queen to stay as a human on land forever with her boyfriend Quince and seek out college and a new life.
Forgive my Fins was great and so I had high expectation for Fins are Forever to be equally good!! However, I think that Fins are Forever was better than my expectations! I devoured the book as fast as possible and might even go back through and read it again! You know the author is great when the second book in the series doesn't have the case of "boring middle book" syndrome but is just as exciting as book one!
The new twists of Lily's bratty younger cousin Doe showing up was great! She is one of those characters you hate but find a bit amusing and appealing! The trouble she brings to the book adds a bit of additional humor to the story that is great!
Again, the plot in this series is unlike anything I've ever read and is so engrossing that it is hard to imagine waiting for the additional books in the series to be released! The ending was a bit predictable but still not disappointing in the least.
The romance is of course the most important part of this story and I loved it in Fins are Forever. I wish there were more kissing scenes between Lily and Quince but what Childs gives us is great! There was a mild make-out session between 2 other characters but it was all done very clean and I would say this book is appropriate for any age group!
One of my favorite things about Tera Lynn Childs writing is that her stories are fun, easy going, delightful but so engaging that you are thinking about the story for a long time after reading it and it is hard not to compare every other mermaid book out there to this outstanding series!
This was a great summer read that you should run out and buy even if you are not a young adult! I am almost 30 and this book has made my favorites list! Not sure how I will survive waiting for book 3.

Adventurers Wanted, Book Two: The Horn of Moran ReviewI was eagerly awaiting the second book in the Adventurer's Wanted Series and needless to say it was worth the wait. The story was well told and even filled in some of the gaps about some of the characters that were in the first adventure but not in this one. It was another story with good character development. You can't help but cheer for Alex as he continues to grow during these adventures. I would like to see him face some real adversity and see how he handles it and continues to grow, but that is just my personal opinion. The book is an enjoyable read for the kid in all of us and reminds us how good it feels to do the right thing. However, when she observes strange creatures wandering around St. Sophia's, Lily realizes slow is no longer an option for her. Although she admits to herself she has made the same pledge re the enigmatic behavior of her parents and adversary Sebastian.
The second Dark Elite (see Firespell) young adult fantasy continues Lily's training in the paranormal as she learns more secrets, especially about her parents and her abilities, but is also is caught up in some sort of otherworldly "turf" war. Fast-paced and mindful of the Casts' House of Night saga and Claudia Gray's Evernight series, readers will enjoy Lily's dilemma. She would prefer to ignore the impossible and hang with the hot hunks rather than joining Scout and friends in mortal combat, but feels Hexbound to learn her craft expeditiously to keep her school, Chicago and the world safe from the others.

Enclave ReviewTake every possible terrible scenario you've ever considered for the future and throw it out the window, this book will blow you away.
I'm a huge fan of dystopian fiction, I loved Hunger Games, Shipbreaker, Z for Zachariah, World War Z, The Passage, 1984 and The Handmaid's Tale, but with Enclave, Ann Aguirre proves that there is still plenty of creative and terrifying stories to tell about society and how it will end (not with a bang, but with a growl of hunger in this case).
Girl15, that's her name, until the naming ceremony where she will learn whether the rest of her life (a very short life, the oldest person she knows is 25) will be spent as a Breeder, a Builder or a Hunter. She wants to be a Hunter and Girl15 gets her wish, her name is changed to Deuce and she is paired with Fade, a strange and mysterious figure who no one else wants to work with. I'll get back to Fade later.
Her dearest friends, Thimble (a builder) and Stone (a breeder because he's so handsome) are happy for her but worried. Hunters have the dangerous job of providing food for the College Enclave (that's the name of the enclave, College). Most hunters don't live very long, in fact, Fade's last partner died shortly after they started working together.
But Deuce is determined, as far as she's concerned, being a Hunter is one of the most important functions a person can have and she's proud to put her life in danger everyday to provide food and safety for the rest of the Enclave.
Fade, her new partner, is a strange combination of lethal skills and smartass defiance. He isn't from the enclave, he was born topside (above the tunnels where the land is dead and burning rain falls or so the elders say), but no one really believes him. They think he must be from a far away enclave and became lost in the tunnels (which is a miracle in and of itself because of the Freaks who roam around). Wherever he comes from, he is a great fighter and Deuce gradually begins to trust him and is glad he is her partner after they encounter increasingly dangerous stuff.
Now on to the scariest part of the story (as if the whole living in tunnels, eating rats and garbage weren't enough!) the Freaks. Scarred with lesions, their teeth long and animal like and their nails thick and claw'ish, the Freaks roam the tunnels looking for meat. Any kind of meat including human. After generations of fighting the mindless creatures, Fade and Deuce find that they are starting to work together, exhibiting sort of a pack mentality in their hunting of humans. The Freaks are getting smarter.
Now this is bad, super duper bad, like on a level with the end of all life as they know it and time is running out to make changes to the Enclave that will help it survive. Deuce and Fade will have to convince the elders of what is going on and that could turn out to be impossible.
Toss in a scary secret about the next nearest enclave, a scheming elder named Silk and Deuce's growing feelings for her partner, Fade and I don't know how I'm going to wait for book two.
Whoo, I feel strangely out of breath just typing all this, the book is a real adrenaline rush, I was flipping through the pages like a person who lives on Red Bull and smarties. Seriously, when the book was done I sat, frozen in place, my heart pounding, wondering how it could have gone by so fast, (I got the book last night!).
Now what will I do? It will probably be another year before Ann Aguirre finishes book two. Oh well, I guess I could read it again.

William Shakespeare's faeries from A Midsummer's Night Dream have been popular characters for YA fiction of late. Following Lesley Livingston's Wondrous Strange and Darklight, The Iron King marks the third book to borrow Puck, Summer King Oberon and Queen Titiana and Winter Queen Mab. Both series also imagine a daughter for King Oberon who discovers her faery heritage and is drawn from the human world into the world of the fey. But that is where the similarities end. The Iron King is a much darker tale.
image On the eve of her sixteenth birthday, Meghan Chase is confronted with a scene straight out of Pet Cemetery when she and her mother are attacked by her four year old brother. Her best friend Robbie (aka the famous Puck) saves her and reveals that her brother has been switched with a faery changeling and the only way to get him back is to find the kidnapper in the Nevernever (aka faeryland).
The world of the faery is as terrifying as it is beautiful. In her quest, Meghan is nearly eaten several times, ripped apart by trolls, drowned by nixies, impaled by a prince, raped by a herd of satyrs, and boiled by Goblins. And that's not even half of it. There is nothing sweet and gentle about the fey in this book.
There are a number of amusing characters who aid/impede Meghan along the way, most notably the cait sith Grimilkin (who is straight out of Alice in Wonderland), and the inevitable love interest Ash, youngest son of the Winter Queen and sworn enemy of Puck. The animosity between Puck and Ash along with each one's motivation for helping Meghan was a constant thread of entertainment.
Meghan does a fairly good job of acclimating to the revelations Puck presents her with. She struggles initially with the idea that faeries are real, but she doesn't blindly cling to her former reality either. She adapts and learns, and rarely makes the same mistake twice. Nor does she allow herself to become distracted from saving her brother. I did find some of her dialogue to be somewhat juvenile and her interest in Ash seemed to have little motivation beyond how 'inhumanly beautiful' he was.
I think what I enjoyed the most about The Iron King was the twist on the traditional fey mythology involving iron. I don't want to give anything away so I won't elaborate, but be ready to start counting down the months until August when The Iron Daughter is released as there is a bit of a cliffhanger ending. In the meantime I have a sudden nostalgic desire to watch Labyrinth.

Beautiful Chaos (Beautiful Creatures, Book 3) ReviewBeautiful Chaos is the third book in Kami Garcia's and Margaret Stohl's series, entitled Beautiful Creatures. The third installment brings so much more to the plate than the first two did. The action is higher in this book than in the first installments, and of course it ends on a ridiculous cliffhanger, just like the second book did. The book is more depressing than the others, because in this book, Ethan is the one having most of the problems, not Lena, and after all he is the narrator.
Beautiful Chaos makes me so excited for the last book in the series, but it also makes me sad that I have to wait an entire year for it! I can't wait to see what Garcia and Stohl bring to the plate when they wrap up the series!Beautiful Chaos (Beautiful Creatures, Book 3) Overview

Daughter of Smoke and Bone ReviewI would like to start off this review by saying that I really didn't want to read this book. The people who decided on the back of the book description did a crappy job explaining this story in an interesting way. Now that I have read it, the back looks good, but from a fresh perspective, it fell flat. If it weren't a Vine book, given to me for free, I would have never picked it out among the thousands of books out there. I am so glad I gave it a try.
This complex story is about a girl who has no idea of who she really is. Her life has been filled with creatures that would cause terror to most but have been family to her. Karou is a strong, talented seventeen year old who helps her "family" of demon like characters collect teeth. The teeth have a use, but Karou has never found out what exactly. She just goes to designated sights through portal doors to collect the teeth and then goes back to her private art school and her one friend. Her lonely life is interrupted by the sight of an angel who is trying to put a stop to the teeth trade and the creatures who traffic them. Even though he should destroy Karou ,he can not bring himself to kill her due to her similarities to his long lost love. What follows is an intriguing tale of forbidden love in a lush, imaginative world.
I know, I know, collecting teeth sounds so...weird. I promise that the author pulls this off and then some. I struggled with what to say without giving too much away, but I wanted to tell more than the back cover. Karou is an interesting heroine who is beautiful, exotic, and real all at the same time. The world building is really the star of this novel. Everything is different than anything I have read. Yes, it has angels in it, but the author still makes everything fresh.
On a different note, I would not recommend this book to younger teens. Not only is it a little more complex, there is sex and sexual situations. I would say sixteen and up as an absolute minimum in age requirement. As an adult, this is one of those YA books that transfers just fine.
Overall, I really liked this book, and I will be looking for the sequel to help ease the cliffhanger ending.Daughter of Smoke and Bone Overview
