The Dawning of Power ReviewIt's hard for me to get into fantasy, even though I like to write it.
Yet, though I don't read much of it, it seems lately I've read more than my norm.
My publisher suggested I read The Dawning of Power. He even let me borrow his copy. I'll admit, I nearly put this book down. At the start, I was lost. I wasn't into it. A bit bored. Perhaps it was reading too late at night. Perhaps it was just my mood. No matter, I sat the book down for a week.
Usually, it's over at that point--off to the cemetery of unread books.
I'm glad I gave The Dawning of Power another chance. I found the story to be a solid, intense read. It was thick, in depth, and sometimes over my head.
This book is long--a hefty read. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, but be ready and be patient. It was a bit intimidating at first, but I found myself flying through the pages.
My only complaint: The Dawning of Power is mostly a character driven book. Overall, I felt Mr. Rathbone's characters were vivid and alive. Likeable. However, the vast amount of characterization took away from the story at times. I felt it was lacking in drama--tension--the chase. The white knuckle, page turning feeling wasn't always present. However, this didn't distract me, and it was not always the case; I simply felt Mr. Rathbone could have put a bit more emphasis on the suspense. Regardless, it didn't take away from my enjoyment.
Overall, The Dawning of Power is a classic tale, filled with adventure and lovable characters. The writing is passionate, and I suspect we'll see much greatness from Mr. Rathbone in the future as his career progresses.

The Knight in Rusty Armor ReviewI know that every man who reads this book will see himself in this book. And I hope that they will pay close attention to this story about a man who learned that he does not have to prove to others that he is good, loving and kind.
Men are traditionally taught to fight the threatening enemies; and place fragile women, who are consumed with despair, into an environment that tells the world that they are materially doing just fine.
What's wrong with this, as the story demonstrates, is that this is done out of allegiance to the world first, as apposed to the man's allegiance to himself, and his family.
He develops emotional, social, and spiritual armor, to the point that he doesn't know who to be fully in the moment, in the presence of others, until the price for living like this potentially costs him the very people who he claims to be providing for.
In this story, the knight learned to take in the reality of life, which led him on a path to find his authentic self. He learned that he had lived his entire life trying to make everyone like him, at the price of not knowing who he himself was, in his heart.
And it was not until he was able to cry tears from his heart, that his armor disappeared, and he was able to go home, and truly love his wife and child. The Knight in Rusty Armor Overview

This Book Will Change Your Life ReviewI have devoted much time to the exercises in this book and so far my life has not changed (drats!) but I have accomplished making a complete fool out of myself (which, to be honest, is no real change).
So far I watched a movie starting with an "F" (Fern Gully), imagined everyone naked (which I do not recommend because it eventually becomes rather icky), ignored a day (more difficult then it sounds), glued a spatula to my arm (strangely no one noticed), managed to lure a fly into the box but missed, tried growing another toe (no luck, yet), went on a one minute hunger strike (more difficult then it sounds), applied for a knighthood (no response, yet), imagined myself as that old man of day 362 and realized that no I am not fulfilled plus I forgot to buy a copy of that weeks TV Guide, took the psychopath test (nope, not telling the results), discovered I am not symmetrical, attempted to invent a new color but only ended up with a mucky sort of beige, spent an entire day ticking off each minute (boring yet profound), and a few other things I cannot or will not mention.
Oh! I even combined two days worth of activities by memorizing Aubrey's face and dressing like a tourist. I searched the city for her, while stopping at tourist attractions which made me recognize the need to move to someplace more exciting, but never found her. I really want to know that secret she is supposedly harboring. I feel it necessary to warn you that I truly believe the whole "Aubrey" thing may be a trick.
Oh! A really eerie thing is that an actual photo of me is in this book. Yes, really! They must have "borrowed" it from a friend's website, that is the only way they could have gotten a hold of it. I tell you, it was quite startling to see myself on one of the pages - I didn`t know whether to be flattered or not. Anyway, it gave me a great opportunity to take advantage of the suggestion for day 256 - tearing up all photos that make you look ugly - and ripped out the page for day 130. I request you do the same and forget you ever saw that picture, please. I look much better in person - I Swear!!!
All in all, I suppose I must admit I've rather enjoyed most of the stuff I've tried. I am starting to feel a bit hysterical so I guess that is a sign it's working. But is that a "good" sign? hmmm....This Book Will Change Your Life Overview

Saltwater Buddha: A Surfer's Quest to Find Zen on the Sea ReviewI started surfing about 3 months ago. That was also around the same time I started seriously looking at Buddhism. It is amazing that I discovered Jamail Yogis's book while going through a vaguely parallel experience.
Coming from this perspective, Saltwater Buddha is an amazing book that blends personal memoir with spiritual insight. It is thoughtful, well-written, and an entertaining read. The last point is worth emphasizing - a spiritual journey may be very interesting to the person going through it, but it will not necessarily resonate with others. Yogis has accomplished the task of translating his inner journey into a narrative that holds the reader's attention and can speak to people from varied spiritual backgrounds.
From a purely descriptive perspective, the book is about a man's intellectual, emotional, and spiritual maturation. Yogis lived a life that many of us dream of. Several times during his life he followed his impulses and went to Hawai'i to pursue his passion for surfing. However, these excursions to Hawai'i were bracketed by emotional growth and learning to take responsibility. As easy as it would be to lose oneself in a tropical paradise, Yogis realized that he needed to balance his passion with the more mundane aspects of life. The book traces his journey back and forth between these twin forces.
At the same time, Yogis is going through significant spiritual growth. Whether it is through private meditation or a stint in a monastery, his spiritual education moved through both formal and informal channels. More significantly, much of his spiritual growth came out of his movement between passion and responsibility. Life is often the greatest spiritual guide. For him, it was surfing that had one of the largest impacts on his journey. Not only did it serve as a metaphor for many of the formal principles in Buddhism, but it also served as spiritual practice.
Most of the surfers that I know acknowledge the spiritual impact surfing has. While they may not recognize it inside a specific dogmatic framework, they are certainly aware of the connection between surfing and some larger cosmic mystery. One reason that Yogis's book is so fascinating is that he looks at surfing through the lens of a particular spirituality. This helps to give structure to thoughts about how surfing impacts people.
Looking at surfing through the lens of Buddhism is not, obviously, just a literary device used by Yogis. However, this particular perspective is what makes Saltwater Buddha unique and engaging. Buddhism is capable of embracing so many different paths of spirituality and surfing was one of the paths for Yogis. The structure of the book reflects this interconnection - spiritual insight is interwoven with the narrative of his life. Each piece serves to illuminate the other.
This is, of course, how life is actually experienced. We do not experience inner and outer experience as separate things. Instead, our spiritual/emotional/intellectual life is completely intertwined with our experiences in the world. We find meaning in the events of our lives and those same events give validation (or challenge) our worldview. It is difficult to capture this in an effective way and even more difficult to convey this to another person in a structured and coherent way. Again, this is a task that Yogis has admirably accomplished.
I have purchased several copies of the book because I plan to give them to friends; to both surfers and nonsurfers. I have found that Saltwater Buddha gives expression to many of the experiences I am having myself. I have found it so difficult to explain my experiences to people that don't surf - which makes Saltwater Buddha even more impressive. Yogis has found an effective way to give voice to the deeply emotional and spiritual aspects of an activity that many dismiss as idle fancy. We should all be thankful for this gift.
I am confident that this book will open your eyes to a different world; even if you have no interest in surfing or Buddhism.

Thirst No. 3: The Eternal Dawn ReviewOne of the big questions about this book is: "How can it be about the same characters?"
Anyone who has read the description knows it is...and having just finished the book, I can say that I am very pleased--and it actually works. And it helps that the author does not try to explain it more than is necessary.
The reviews of `The Eternal Dawn' are bound to be mixed. Anyone who has only read the `Thirst' books will most likely be disappointed. And anyone who has read all of Pike's novels will fall in love with Alisa (Sita) all over again. But it could go either way.
When I read that `The Last Vampire' series was being re-released as `Thirst,' I reread the series. My big concern was getting through the sixth book again. It had always felt forced to me...like Pike was told he had to conclude the series and move on--or that someone else had written it, except for the epilogue. But it made a little bit more sense when I read the series all at once (but still did not feel right).
When I first read that he was continuing the series, I did not want to believe it. There has always been a rumor that he planned more books; but after fifteen years, I was beginning to think it was a hoax. There was also the rumor that he never wanted to write `young adult' novels ever again....
A lot of people will claim that Pike wrote `Thirst' because vampires are big now. But the truth is that the series was originally released in the mid-1990s and were a huge success with Pike's fans--even the final book (at the time) kept fans waiting for more. Then, in 1997, the author disappeared for seven years. He had left us with mediocre stories like `The Execution of Innocence' and `Magic Fire' and the horrible (my opinion) `The Grave' (which should have ended after the first chapter).
He returned in 2004 with the long awaited `The Blind Mirror' - which was good enough to satisfy a need for new Pike. Then he went into the `Alosha' series. I got halfway through the second book and stopped. When the time comes, I will try again. I have `Falling' but have not read it yet. [I feel that Pike is trying a little too hard when it comes to his adult works. `Sati' and `The Listeners' are recommended. I have not read `The Cold One' - and `The Season of Passage' will require me to reread it because I am one of few fans that said "It's just okay" (good concept, weak payoff) while most people loved it.]
His return to `The Last Vampire' (I hate the new title `Thirst') is amazing. After fifteen years, he still gets Sita's voice perfectly. There are some flaws with `The Eternal Dawn', but I have chosen to overlook them for two reasons. 1) I want to know where Pike is going with this series. 2) I am giving Pike extra credit for making it very difficult to write a review for `Thirst 3' because I want to explain the plot twists so bad!
Appropriate reading age: 15+ (please note that the 15 is because this is a book - as a movie, it would be rated R) for violence, sexual references, drug references, mild language, and themes.

Zen And the Art of Happiness ReviewI've read many, many books on Zen and the way of happiness...but this one is the best I've ever read. And the beauty of it is that it makes it very simple, straight to the point, and tells you the way to achieve real happiness in life. I've recommended it to many people and still re-read it every few months. The simplicity of it is very powerful and it has the potential to really change one's own life.Zen And the Art of Happiness Overview
