The Way of the Wizard: Twenty Spiritual Lessons for Creating the Life You Want ReviewI have been reading and studying works of theology, spirituality, philosophy and mysticism for over twenty years, following my own path and doing my best to discern truth from the writings of Christian, Hindu, Buddhist and other backgrounds. I have a library of treasured works that have helped me along a journey that has taken me from a time of profound confusion, doubt, dread, depression, anxiety and pain to a life of pervasive peace, consistent joy and ever growing love.
In that vast library of works, many of the books I've read I considered great ... exceptionally well suited to guide me through the particular phase of life through which I was going ... but NO book I've EVER read was MORE PERFECTLY written for where I am now in my life than The Way of the Wizard.
Having been on this journey as long as I have, I can see how this work would seem fluffy and insubstantial to many and perhaps even most people who would read it. Had it been around for me to pick up 20 or even 10 years ago, I'm quite certain I wouldn't have understood it much or considered it profound. But when I finished reading this book for the first time (which I did in one sitting), it was as if the book had been written specifically for me. It rang so true to the precise experience of life I've had for the past several decades that at points I laughed out loud from the pure joy of recognition.
Others have written about the contents of this book ... I've chosen to address the way it left me feeling. There are those of you out there for whom that will be the more telling review. You know who you are.The Way of the Wizard: Twenty Spiritual Lessons for Creating the Life You Want Overview

The Law of the Garbage Truck: How to Respond to People Who Dump on You, and How to Stop Dumping on Others ReviewI heard about David J. Pollay from a friend of mine. I had been mired in a miasma of personal issues and had become a very negative person who would burst into tears with little to no encouragement. I would pour out my personal woes; money issues, loneliness, anger towards the last person who broke my heart, and petty injustices that I felt were intended by everyone around me. I would drive fast, listen to loud music, and ignore the positives in my life. I was self destructive. I was hateful. I was a Garbage Truck.
I opened an advanced copy of this book, lent to me by my dear friend, and started to read. I realized that Pollay's examples of Garbage Trucks (people who spread negative emotions to others) closely resembled my own life. He uses personal, real life examples to express the benefits of allowing yourself to ignore Garbage Trucks and to not be one yourself, and backs each anecdote up with facts from a number of well researched psychological studies. The questions phrased at the end of each chapter allow the reader to express the negatives in their lives and to use the principles taught in the chapter prior to start the process of healing and letting it pass them by. The Law of the Garbage Truck is part anger management, part self help, and all love. It's about making choices to share the positive emotions and experiences in life, and to leave the garbage at the curb.
Empowerment is the name of Pollay's game, and his desire is to change the world, one positive person at a time. I reached an epiphany at the end of the book. I realized that what I had for years called "being honest" and "wearing my heart on my sleeve" had really been a way for me to unload and vent my problems to others, allowing them to pick up the load for me so I could have momentary relief until the next negative moment in my life occurred, and the cycle would begin again. I stopped getting upset when the driver behind me sped around me and cut me off. I realized that forgiveness and acceptance were far better tools than anger and vengeance. David J. Pollay is a fantastic writer, who uses wit and just plain facts to get across this potent message. I recommend that everyone read this book...for the betterment of themselves, and our society/world as a whole. We've been waiting for this voice for years...it's time we listened. The Law of the Garbage Truck: How to Respond to People Who Dump on You, and How to Stop Dumping on Others Overview

The Chronology of Water: A Memoir ReviewBeyond its clear, dazzling lyrical passages, beyond its fierce energy and unending optimism, there is so much to say about this confessional, bravely written memoir, and you can be sure that The Chronology of Water is an important book. Its themes -- womanhood, motherhood, stillbirth, women's reproductive rights, bisexuality, love and fatherhood, promiscuity and sexual violence, drug and alcohol abuse, sorrow and grief, hope, and survival -- are cultural and political talking points, significant because these issues ought to be discussed and must be heard. That Lidia Yuknavitch is brave enough to begin these discussions with her readers is well worth applauding, and I think it would be a shame and an oversight to think anything less of the importance, and relevance, of this book. The Chronology of Water: A Memoir Overview

Wisdom of the Mystic Masters ReviewThis book contains the core teachings of the Rosicrucian order. This book is enlightening, just reading one paragraph causes a powerful lift in my conciousness every time I read it. They language is a bit antiquated but the meaning is very clear and concise. The ideas are complex, but they are broken down and expressed in the simplest way possible. There are no unneccessary details; it gets straight to the point.
But don't take my word for it. You can get "A Rosicrusian Speaks" for FREE on the internet. Just do a Google search for Joseph J. Weed, click on "A Rosicrucian Speaks", then copy the papers to your hard drive as a text file.
It is a collection of lectures given by Joseph J. Weed to Rosicrucian lodges in the 40's-60's. The wording is a bit unnusual but the ideas are the greatest treasures I have ever gotten for free, on the internet. If you read these lectures, you will want more, and want to get "Wisdom of the Mystic Masters".Wisdom of the Mystic Masters Overview

Fat,Forty,Fired: One Man's Frank,Funny, and Inspiring Account of Losing His Job and Finding His Life ReviewI had picked up this book hoping for a funny and inspiring story of someone finding himself after a job loss. Unfortunately, I found Fat, Forty and Fired to be tired and somewhat simplistic. The author came across as overly privileged and frankly, whiny. For example, gosh, he had to fly coach using some of his frequent flyer miles during a trip to Europe! And seats only reclined an inch or two! Plus they had to fire the nanny (although the wife already stayed at home). Yawn.
This is on top of short chapters and a stunning lack of detail.
It was disappointing to see how quickly he went back to some of his old ways at the end of the book. Didn't even make the swim race he had talked about for some fifty pages or so throughout the book.
Even more concerning are the rest of the reviews on Amazon. I find it hard to to see how everyone else gave this book 5 stars. But I see 13 of the 16 other reviewers have only this one review to their name. Nigel's friends and family perhaps?Fat,Forty,Fired: One Man's Frank,Funny, and Inspiring Account of Losing His Job and Finding His Life Overview

Being Happy ReviewThis book is great, it is about understanding yourself, being able to laugh at yourself, becoming more prosperous and being able to forgive yourself. It also discusses understanding natures laws so we can better deal with our own natures. What i like in the book aswell as the information is the comics in the books, they are terrifis, entertaining and very humorous. Now time for the run down on each chapter.
CHAPTER 1: This chapter deals self image, health and pain. Fact from chapter: The nicer you treat yourself the nicer others treat you.
CHAPTER 2: This chapter deals with depression, happiness and humor. Fact from chapter: Did you know that laughter is the best medicine.
CHAPTER 3: This chapter deals with thoughts, power of words and gratitude. Fact from chapter: Did you know that imagination is more important then knowledge.
CHAPTER 4: This chapter seems to deal with taking risks, setting goals and commitment. Fact from chapter: Did you know you only get back what you put out.
CHAPTER 5: This chapter deals with nature, learning from children and changes. Fact from chapter: Did you know the player in sport who usually gets hurt the most is the one who is moving the least.
CHAPTER 6: This chapter only has only one content called "here is where you begin."It deals with how what ever you are today may influence you to be the same in the next 10 to 20 years.
Overall this is a great book, though i recomend that you be no younger than 13 to get this because im 13 and there is some stuff in the book i can't relate to which was why i gave it 4 stars, but any way hope this helped. THANKYOU FOR READING-peaceBeing Happy Overview

The Conquest of Happiness ReviewThe other reviewers have done a fine job reviewing the book, and I'd just like to emphasize a few points.
1. Although a few of the references are dated because the book was written in 1930, all of the ideas are still perfectly relevant.
2. This is not a book of formal philosophy; more of introspection. Of course Russel introspected with the same brilliant and critical mind that he used to contribute to mathematics and philosophy. But this is not rigorous, apologetic or systematic. Actually, it's more like gentle advice. And quite reasonable.
I'd like to quote a few passages that I found thought-provoking, to give a reader a sense of what to expect if you purchase and read this book:
p. 27, "[T]o be without some of the things you want is an indispensable part of happiness."
p. 29, "The habit of looking to the future and thinking that the whole meaning of the present lies in what it will bring forth is a pernicious one. There can be no value in the whole unless there is value in the parts."
p. 43, "I do not deny that the feeling of success makes it easier to enjoy life.... Nor do I deny that money, up to a certain point, is very capable of increasing happiness. What I do maintain is that success can only be one ingredient in happiness, and is too dearly purchased if all the other ingredients have been sacrificed to obtain it."
p. 74, "The essentials of human happiness are simple, so simple that sophisticated people cannot bring themselves to what it is that they really lack."
p. 94, "[R]emember that your motives are not always as altruistic as they seem to yourself... don't overestimate your own merits... don't expect others to take as much interest in you as you do in yourself."
p. 99, "No satisfaction based upon self-deception is solid, and however unpleasant the truth may be, it is better to face it once and for all, to get used to it, and to proceed to build your life in accordance with it."
p. 107, "One should respect public opinion in so far as is necessary to avoid starvation and to keep out of prison, but anything that goes beyond this is voluntary submission to an unnecessary tyranny, and is likely to interfere with happiness in all kinds of ways."
p. 109, "Happiness is promoted by associations of persons with similar tastes and similar opinions."
p. 123, "The secret of happiness is this: let your interests be as wide as possible, and let your reactions to the things and persons that interest you be as far as possible friendly rather than hostile."
p. 142, "In the best kind of affection a man hopes for a new happiness rather than for an escape from an old unhappiness."
p. 175, "To ignore our opportunities for knowledge, imperfect as they are, is like going to the theater and and not listening to the play."
Well, that's a reasonable sample. It's not a philosophical masterpiece, but it is mature, wise and edifying. I think most people who read books would do well to read this one too, so I give it a hearty endorsement. The Conquest of Happiness Overview

The Business of Happiness: 6 Secrets to Extraordinary Success in Life and Work ReviewAs a 20+ year Caps fan, serial entrepreneur and voracious business book reader, I immediately pre-ordered the book when it was first available...and it was one of the best books I've read this year!
There are 2 main parts to the book. The first starting with Ted's story and the second with the 6 principles outlined and dissected. Following Ted's blog I've read parts of his story but never the whole thing and found this really insightful and inspiring.
I loved the journey and how each new endeavor (business or charitable) lead to more insights and distinctions for Ted towards happiness. Starting with a list of 101 items it was instructive to see how `business-like' Ted started with this journey to happiness or what he thought would make him happy. I really like how he pointed out buying a Ferrari (which was on the list) was like an empty calorie and didn't have much meaning afterwards. But other items on the list had a tremendous impact on his happiness.
The life list is the first of 6 tenets of happiness as identified by Ted. 1) Life list. 2) Multiple Communities of Interest. 3) Finding Outlets for Self-Expression. 4) Gratitude. 5) Giving Back. 6) Higher Calling.
It's a great list to focus on and this was the first business book I've seen to mention "Higher Calling" and "Finding Outlets for Self Expression" to help with your happiness. I love that and totally believe in it!
Ted repeatedly warns readers that `over-indexing' in one facet of your life - business success - prevents you from being happy. It's in the variety and living a full life that happiness occurs as a by-product. And this is certainly a good roadmap for anybody who wants to get there and take a shortcut.

Happiness Is a Serious Problem: A Human Nature Repair Manual ReviewWhether or not you are a fan of Dennis Prager's talk shows, a half-hour with this book will prove to you that, not only can this man think, but he has an incomparable gift for elucidating one of life's key preoccupations: the trials and tribulations associated with one's quest for happiness. For me, this book is not so much of a "repair manual," as it is one of the most insightful, succinctly written books on how happiness is linked to human nature, philosophy, morals, temperament and values.
Mr. Prager writes: "The greatest battle for happiness is with our own nature." If we can look inward and understand our drives and the intrinsic characteristics of what it means to be human, we then can use our intellect, spirituality and relationships with others to develop a stronger affinity for happiness. Or, perhaps, create in happiness an affinity for us.
The author divides the book into three parts consisting of thirty-one chapters. If read from front to back, the book flows nicely from "Premises" to "Major Obstacles..." to "Attitudes and Behaviors That are Essential to Happiness." What I especially like is that the individual chapters stand alone, and are great for highlighting the author's views on very specific issues and problems. The most interesting ones deal with the dilemma between happiness and fun, the problems with expectations, and the preponderance of victimhood in today's world. Prager has some profound views on these, and many other topics. He makes you think.
Overall, "Happiness..." turned out to be enlightening and quite easy to read (you won't need a dictionary by your side). I'd rank it at the top of my list (also check out "When Bad Things Happen to Good People") of books dealing with life's disappointments and successes, emotion and human nature.Happiness Is a Serious Problem: A Human Nature Repair Manual Overview

Happy for No Reason: 7 Steps to Being Happy from the Inside Out ReviewWhen I first saw the title, "Happy for No Reason," I'll have to admit that my initial reaction was that this would be just one more new age, touch-feely, full-of-fluff feel-good book. So I was very pleasantly surprised to see how thoroughly-researched, well-written, and down-to-earth practical this book is. "Happy for No Reason" is a groundbreaking philosophy that belongs in the same category as the work of David Burns (cognitive mood therapy), Martin Seligman (learned optimism), Daniel Goleman (emotional intelligence) and Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi (flow). It is a brilliant blend of scientific research summarized in language that anyone can understand plus stories from people Marci calls the Happy 100, people who are role models of happiness for the sake of happiness, not because of love or money or other exogenous factors.
I was so impressed with this book that I gave copies to each of my children as Christmas gifts this year. I'm hoping they will read it with a pen or highlighter in hand, which is what I found myself doing - and would recommend to you as well. It's easy to be unhappy, which might be why so many people are. Watch TV for an hour and you'll have a hundred reasons to not be happy; it's nice to know that you can choose to be happy for no reason at all.Happy for No Reason: 7 Steps to Being Happy from the Inside Out Overview

Real Happiness: The Power of Meditation: A 28-Day Program ReviewI usually spend some time discussing meditation with several of my Psychology classes, and the more interested students often ask for additional information (readings, audio tapes, etc.). I usually reply that there are a number of good resources available, but I finally found one that I can enthusiastically recommend without reservation. Sharon Salzberg's book describes everything from meditation (breathing, walking, body scanning, even drinking tea) to mindfulness (emotions, dealing with thoughts and feelings via recognition, acceptance, investigation and nonidentification) to loving-kindness meditation (cultivating compassion and true happiness, paying attention to ourselves and others with interest and care). She introduces a 28-day guided program of 20 minute meditation sessions. There is an extended discussion of the benefits of meditation. The book also comes with a CD with four guided meditations, which is among the best I've listened to. The book is what I've come to expect from Salzberg. Highly recommended!Real Happiness: The Power of Meditation: A 28-Day Program Overview
